Hey - is anyone selling at the minute for decent money? I'm keeping mine as a pet becaue I just can't get a respectable price for it. Too good a car to give away...

Worried buying the Rx8

Hey guys, how ya doing? I am new here and tomorrow I probably be the new owner of a 04 black, 231bhp 6 speed Rx8, but doing my research on the car, there is loads of complaints on the car like flooding, engine rebuilding, problem with hot and cold starts, engine durablity etc etc and it kinda putting me off of buying it. Don't get me wrong, its a beautiful stunning car and i can see the car will turn heads driving through town. If i do buy the Rx8, can you guys give me some pointers of maintianing the car and the engine, what to look out for, the dos and don'ts of the car, if I have some problems with the car in the future, is there a Rotary mechanic around the south. I live around Tipperary and your help will be very appreciated!! Thanx

Ask the owner to do a compression test, see what recalls were done and get ready to spend between 500 and 1000€ in maintenance\touch ups if the car turns out to be ok.

Hello and welcome atari!

Whereabouts in Tipp are you?

The main things to find out are:

1) Has it got an upgraded starter/battery/ignition coils/HT leads/plugs.

2) It's not entirely neccessary but get a compression test done.

3) What oil has been used. It should be 5W30 and nothing else.

Where is the car you're looking at? Have you got a link?

i got it today in from a fella in dublin, its been advertised in carzone.ie. the ad is gone now. it was so fun drive back home. i am from clonmel and i think you are from thurles. i have been reading all your info on this thread and seem that you have a great knowledge on this car. i don't know very much about this car but hopefully you can help me if needed. i will look into upgrading the car with the things you said and actually that is the oil being used that you recommended. feel free to give me a buzz if your ever in clonmel. thanx very much. p.s where is the nearest place getting a compression test done? the mazda garage here?

Haha how did you know I'm from Thurles? Good to hear you're happy with the car!

I didn't know much about it when I bought mine but owning one is as much a learning process as a huge enjoyment.

Yeah, you're very lucky to be living in Clonmel. Ryan Motor Power (052/6180323) are excellent. They even have their own rotary compression tester on site.

If you're contacting them, Kevin is the head mechanic and Tom is the guy in the parts section. With that said, I used get very little from him. I got all my stuff from www.rotaryfx.com. It's a great site with service parts and a lot more at less than half the cost of what you'd pay here!

Ha, from reading this forum. you told somebody that you were from thurles and wanted a meet up with all the rx8s or something like that. its really great to know that i have a garage here for the car if anything happens to it and i definitely get a compression test done. Cheers dude for everything, really appreciated. oh one more thing, who did you insured with in that car? 123.ie? cos having trouble picking the right style of the car on that site cos its 1.7 231bhp 6 speed and i don't see that right one there.

Just got a compression done to my RX8, and every is fine. The Engine is in good condition so am really happy about that. The mechanic told me rev it up and drove it hard in 2nd gear to maintain the engine for 10 sec, once a week so i am going have some fun.

yeah up in donegal myself was looking about for irish/uk members for advice and so on lol ill keep reading about here, cars running bit funny down on power and fuel consumptions a bit higher, engine sounds a bit louder as if its a bit drowned, started after i drove through about 1-2 feet deep water going to bally bofey there few weeks back was running ok then the engine light came on , pulled the code p0420 which indicates the cat however seen a video there about the plugs and coils needing replaced, think this might be the actual problem now because engine put itself out so id assume cat is grand now,
anyone in ireland uk know much about the bhr ignition system available for the car is it more beneficial than the original gonna change it all roudn next month, roll on pay day lol. then was thinking bout investing in a midpipe to keep the cat good for the test.
any information would be great ie about the rear o2 sensor with the midpipe does it improve the engine or does it make it run a bit funny cos i know it turns on the engine light when installed.
plus any tips on keeping her running sweet would be great, and also the decarbonizing of the engine, ive read seafoam is great but hard to get here i read about people cleaning engine with water, was interested if anyone has tried think
Cheers anyways

There is a chance that it can be repaired. Someone wrote something up here about it. It may be in the DIY forum. There are two. One in the front and rear.

thanks very much for the info but the sensor fell apart when he took it out. is it possible that i can adjust it manaully instead of buying a sensor? it is pretty dangerous at night time that you don't see enough of the road!!

Just posting in the case ,if some meeting is going on, i would be more than happy to join.
