ECU upgrade in Europe

I went to the dealer today, where I had my ECU checked. The guy said that it should be upgraded, since its the old version". I bought my car in March, so I reckon it has been produced in December/January.
The whole process took about 2 minutes. I was talking to the manager and told him that I had a few bad starts during spring in low temperatures, but no flooding. He said that this will solve the problem and that gas consumption will get better. I think time will tell
My question is: has anyone else in europe heard about that? Does it have to do anything with the 'L' and 'M' reflases they get in the US?
The only different thing I noticed driving back from the dealer was a noise coming from the engine as if it had an aftermarket air filter
I will post here, if I see any differences and keep you all guys informed...

well, after all those months, I have to agree with Caecil that there is no difference in consuption... pretty much the same.
The strange part is that I think I figured out why: I was on the highway with another friendly 8, and the guy told me my car was shooting huge flames from the exhaust tips everytime I lifted my foot of the gas pedal. This means it still runs pretty rich, despite the fact that the ECU update makes it run leaner than previously... It's very cool though
