RX8Fun/derwankel rear Lip Spoiler review

Got my lip spoiler in from derwankel last week. Unit came very well packaged and the paint was a perfect match. This unit is held in place with high quality 3M tape and magnets so there is no need to drill holes. Instructions said to test fit spoiler to dwck lid with covering still on tape and masking tape placed on magnets. This allows you to set spoiler on trunk and slide it around to obtain the best fit. John also supplied two mounting guides that are placed on the trunk lid with tape after
you have the exact position selected. This allows you to remove the spoiler to remove the covering on the 3M tape and replace the spoiler back in the exact same spot (as the spoiler is now there to stay). I like the look of this spoiler ever since I saw it at the Mazda Rev It Up in Irvine last year. Hope you like the pics
Good job derwankel!!

Yes it looks great but I think derwankel and d menac 7 have discontinued the lip spoiler?? Don't know why but I noticed they stopped offering it awhile ago...

Yeah, it is not offered at the moment as when derwankel retired, he is the only one who has the mold for this item. Also, I cannot manufacture such a large item as this. I do not have the facilities nor ability to do so. When I find some time I may try to locate a source for these but at present, I am swamped and working as fast as the Santa's helpers nearing Christmas Day. I am sorry this item is not available at this time.

Great write up. That is probably my favorite spoiler of all and nicely unique. Dang I wish I'd held off on the OEM. The more I see this one the more it fits the 8.

Congratulations on your new addition. It looks positively maaaah-velous

Hey D Menec 7, Are there any plans to make another run of these sometime in the future? I was holding off until the new year to order one, but it appears I am too late. Hope to see that one back on the product list soon...

If you plan to make a mold, might as well get a hold of the r-magic rear lip. It's just a little bit more agressive looking but still well within good taste.

I think I can speak for derwankel who designed it and even pattened it. Yes, it is attached that well. The 3M adhesive tape is strong enough to open the trunk by pulling up on it alone. The spoiler he designed also has magnets encased ni the resin which have twin magnets which are placed in the trunk lid associated with these. The magnets he used for this are the strongest natural magnets in the world. The main reason he designed it this way is to hold it in place while the acrylic adhesive on the tape cured. After a couple of days, it is very difficult to remove any item as such. Every part that is an add on by Mazda themselve's use this same adhesive 3M tape. Try to take the badges off your car, you cannot do it without first heating them up with a hair dryer to very warm just to loosen the adhesive. I have a front badge that I molded and put on with the adhesive alone just as a test for the emblem...my wife wanted me to remove it because it is black and she likes it chrome, I cannot get it off, it is stuck there. I am willing to bet that if I could get a good grip of it, I could open my hood by holdnig on to it alone. The CF side vents by Gemini are also held on by this tape. Knowing the properties of this adhesive, I would not worry about it coming off at all as some others have expressed their concerns. This stuff is made specifically for adherence without the use of hardware such as nuts, screws and bolts. They use similar adhesive to put windows in sky scrapers without using other hardware. It's better than band aids, cause it's really stuck on you. :D

I think if you can find a way to get these manufactured in the new future, you will sell lots of them. I lease my car so I like the fact that I'm not putting holes in the truck lid.

Definately one of the most tasteful, subdued and non-ricey designs. Make it and I'll buy one.

You would be better off talking to derwankel. Dennis is uber busy with orders for all of his other products that you will be waiting a long time for him to even consider a production run of these. That is if derwankel allows him to do so with the patent having been applied for and all.

Sorry guys ... I'm not on this forum much these days ... spend most my time on the "other" forum. Anyway, yes, I'm looking at cranking these out in a couple of months...when things warm up a bit more.

No Alfred, don't turn your 8 to a ricer!

While we're waiting for Der Wankle, anyone have an opinion on the Kinght Sports lip? Pictures I've seen has it similar to an FD stock piece. I'm thinking about getting their full aero kit, but can't find any writeups or testimonials related to quality, material and fitment. They're pretty pricey too, so want to look before I leap. One reason I like the KS bumper is they acknowledge the presence of the frame bumper and cover it up, unlike the faux grillwork in the top 1/3 of the stock radiator opening (yeach).
