Young Punks...

Okay guys....I have a question...

Can the RX8 be stolen?

I was at work today and these 2 idots were profiling my car like the were going to steal it!!

Or brake in...& take that expensive sterio which I do not have!

Can they drive away or will the alarm disable the engine???

As far as I know, you can NOT steal a RX8, unless you use a tow truck. Reason being is that by the time they remove your driving column to get to the second kill switch, its a slim chance no one has seen them. So the car should be extremely hard to steal.

Breaking in and causing a mess, rummaging around like large vermin, well you can't stop that.

Hope that helps.

Thanks...a little reassuring.

A co-worker was leaving and saw them look at my 8. She turned back to come and tell me & they backed off.

Two guys, one talking on a cell phone and the other looking at my car. One parking spot away with no car inbetween.

Hopefully they were just enjoying the beauty of the 8 and not anything more. (doubt it though)

oh god I was panicking for a second thinking WHAT HAPPENED??!?! and ready to hold my head in my hands..

I read a thread somewhere some guy in BC..(??) had his stolen out of the parkade in his building... but I'm with Gyrobot by the time they get it going someone will have seen.

I'm more worried about haters than thieves.. a guy I worked with had someone pop a lit cigarette in through his tilted open sunroof.. burned the interior badly.

Glad its okay Leesha! Install a shock sensor to make it more 'unstealable!'

Edit: once its started, its free to roam... the alarm wont kill it

Leesha,

I doubt they were trying to steal the car. Probably thinking of vandalizing it. I can see people doing this. To actually steal the car would require alot of work. Especially on an RX-8. It having the chip and all to activate the car within the key management. They would have to be pros and have the right equipment.
We all know nothing is unstealable. If they wanted the car, they'll find a means of getting it.
A more common scenario would be waiting for you to come out and unlocking the car. Little do they know who they'll be messing with!

Your car will be alright. I would be worried about them vandalizing it before actually stealing it.

What is a shock sensor and how much would it be? I'm glad it's okay too!! That car is one of the best things that's ever happened to me. I just love it.

When I saw that I went out & moved my car right infront the store.

Mazda will put one in I thnk. It measures vibrations in addition to the normal alarm mode that comes with the RX8. So if someone is f-ing with it the motion will set the alarm off.

Because my windows are so dark I think they thought there was something of value to steal inside.

When I went to move the car it was bright outside, they were looking at me and were in their car. But I had this police thing (from work) on me where I just push the button & they come. Anyways...thank God it was daytime & other cars were around.

Who knows what they could have done. Don't even want to go there!!

Sorry to hear that , Leesha.
You have three choices.
Keep the car in sight all the time.
Upgrade your alarm. Some can take pictures of anyone near the car.
Leave it in the garage like Neo does.

http://trussville.buymazdaparts.com/...&modelcode=RX8

About the 6th one down on the page Leesha. I have one installed and I like it. It took a few times to get the sensitivity set right, but mine has a **** adjustment. Just use the tennis ball and the three foot test to set it right. It's basically a vibration sensor and mine would get set off by thunder or a passing Harley, so I backed it off slighhtly. I think the new ones are adjustable and probably set that same way. Trussville or Rosenthal is going to probably be the cheapest.

In some 3rd world countries, militaries will often create a live ground with the battery to the car. So anyone who touches the metal body gets a nice 12V shock.

Another option maybe?

^^ I read about this too, and some guy that had stickers all over his car warning people not to touch it. LOL. Of course, you know everyone will to see what the big deal is... ZIIIING!

Leesha, the sensor is like $50 at the dealer. They can put it in, or there is a DIY if you feel so inclined.

Wires can be a bitch to find and decide which to tap into, but othere than that, it's not terrible. If you still want Mazda to do it, then look at my last thread above and wait for Trussville to have free shipping! Then you can have your dealer install it or find someone that will do it for you. I'd do it, but I'm in Florida! Shouldn't take someone who has done it already longer than about 30 minutes tops. Decent instructions are provided with the alarm.

Does the alarm just go off when your car has been touched, bumped, etc. or does it also come with a remote that notifies you of such an occurence?

The Mazda one just sets off the normal alarm.....lights and horn. Guess I like it because it ties into the stock alarm and is activated with the same key fob or is set with the stock alarm. I wish it had some kind of remote that told you, but sadly......it does not. For the most part, this is just about slowing a thief down. Most theives will simply go look for an easier target once it goes off.

We need a DIY to connect a big friggin cap with some really good voltage that would charge up as you drive, then when the car is locked and alarmed it would connect to the outside body of the car. Once the key fob is used to unlock, then you could have the cap be bled off. Ever get bit or grab a spark plug / ingnition coil wire with a crack in the shield while engine is running? Hello!

I would have gotten an aftermarket one with that remote that tells you which door was hit. My friend installed one on his 6 and it has some crazy range on it. But I like the credit card key and would defeat the purpose of me not bulking up my pockets with needless things.
