Winter better dilemma !!

I officially have decided to store the rx8 and buy a winter beater for the upcoming winter. My only concern is insurance. And storage of the beater in the summer months.

Those of you with winter beaters im assuming youre fully insured on the beater all year round and the rx8 only summer months. So that would mean being insured on both cars during the summer months ??? What do you guys do ??

I would have to drive the winter beater all year round cause i have 3 cars at home right now and the winter beater will make it 4. I have a 2 door garage. And one spot will be for my rx8 and one for my brother (and i doubt hell give up his spot to store my winter beater during summer months) which means the winter beater will have to be driven all year round and the rx8 will become more of a weekend car instead of a DD.

I need inputs from those of you who are young and both have an rx8 and a winter beater. What do you guys do ?? How much is your insurance per year roughly ?? You guys think its worth it ??

Thanks !!

I store the bitch in the cheapest parking lot I can find. It's a beater, so I don't care about it.

I take the 8 off insurance and just insure the beater during the winter. In the summer the beater has just theft and damage. The beater costs me in insurance $130 a month to run when I use it and the 8 costs me $250 a month.

Nah, its a condo lot my friend lives at. I rented an above ground spot from another tenant for $50 a month.

Come this spring I might just sell the beater and get rid of it, too many things wrong with it now. Don't cheap out, you'll just end up with a gigantic headache when things (inevitably) go wrong.

I store the car I'm not using at my buddy's condo parking.

When stored, the 8 has liability removed from insurance. It's covered in comprehensive, theft, etc. The winter beater only has liability.

When out, the 8 is fully covered and the beater is stored with absolutely no insurance whatsoever.

The Xterra is year round while the 8 is summer only. The Xterra costs me $100/month full coverage

The Rx-8 is $90/month full coverage, gets roughtly cut in half ($45/month, roughtly, I'll get the numbers in a few weeks again of course) for fire and theft only in the winter. She gets stored at my grandmothers back in Niagara, but next year I'll have to find storage since I've been posted to Quebec and I'll be bringing the car up come spring.

"Summer" Insurance : $190/month
"Winter" Insurance : $145/month

The X is my DD, Rx8 is my fun car, weekend and some evenings. I'm military, so I either walk to work, or it's a really short drive, which I perfer not to expose the 8 to.

When I was young, I had a winter beater. Now that I'm older, I don't.

It's not so much that I got wiser, but that I got lazier.

The idea is that you think: "I'll treat my beater like **** and it will still get me around". But the reality is that you need to pay for maintenance so that the thing can run. At the end of the day you're dealing with two vehicles; even if one is cheaper.

Just my 2 cents.

Edit: after re-reading your post I think you're insane lol. Winter beater all year round?

Well, probably not having winter all year round, but just a second "beater", not a DD, just a useful second vehicle. It's nice to have when you want to work on your vehicle but can't because since it's your DD.

Store it at a Public Storage place like:

http://www.storagefront.com/self-sto...gn=Ontario-lbc

they have full video surveillance, and you need a Pin code to get on the property and your locker is as large as a single car garage.
That is what I plan to do when i get my second car cuz i live in a condo and only have one spot and to get a second spot at the condo almost cost double then rent is at the Storage facility

If anyone is interested I'm selling my 96' Integra LS winter beater. I store my R3 for a month and rats have already made it a home so I plan to just drive it through the winter. PM me for details.

During summer, I fully insure both FD and SE, so I can enjoy max, two cars together insurance is about $350. (April - Sept, 5 months).

I usually store my FD in October. FD is paying $18 for that comprehensive and theft thing each month.

Just wondering... How did you discover that rats have crawled up into your car? don't you stuff the exhaust with steel wool? I'm asking because I'm in the process of putting it thru winter hibernation

^ lol if you saw his FB photo there was a fair amount of rat sh*t in the engine bay... I'm sure the smell of it would alert you to their presence ! I'm actually quite concerned now .... I'm going to lay down mouse traps underneath the front of the car - have a Ford Mustang car cover that perfectly seals off the exhaust tips!

Mouse traps didn't stop them. They set them off, ate the bait and continued to **** everywhere.

I was about to disconnect the battery a month after storage. I opened the hood and bam, rat **** smell, and rat ****. I drove the car around the block and smelt nastyness coming out of the vents. I'm taking it to Ajincourt Mazda this week or next to get a cleaning. It will probably cost me a pretty penny.

The car cover will give them a nice warm home to live in. I suggest keeping your engine bay open with a thin sheet covering the internals. This will stop dust and keep the engine bay freezing cold. Do the same for your windows, leave them down. I don't think you'll have to worry about the trunk. Dust that accumulates on the body of the car can be washed off, and if you put down a good coat of wax beforehand you have no worries.

Also invest in a BB gun and some good poison. Get any food out of the garage and lay the poison down, if they are in there they will starve and be forced to eat it.

Do a regular check up on the car, once a week or biweekly.

The exhaust system is the least of your worries, I think it would be easier to clean out than the air system or the engine bay. Roast the *******.

^ An ultrasonic rodent deterrent under the hood works well for me even when outside stored with a cover. I run power to it and a BatteryTender.

We have an ultrasonic pest control device plugged in, they decided to get revenge and chew on the ignition wires for the mazda 3. We responded by cementing up their little hole to get to the roof and the hole they were using to get under the garage door. I also shot one, but didn't kill it. It probably crawled off to die somewhere else.

The war is almost over, no new **** discovered when I checked an hour ago.

I have a 2006 Jetta as a DD, and I have the rx8 as (Enjoyment Driving, not limited to kms)

so for both i pay $250 a month, when winter hits I store the 8 and put it under fire and theft which is like $7/month. and the jetta is like 170$. Im with statefarm so they are pretty good on some discounts such as multicar, good student, steer clear, and clean record. may go lower when i turn 25 years old.

My 8 was stored all it's life. Mice got to the insulation under the hood but I checked, all wires are untouched. While the previous owner had it in a garage, mines in a carport and covered. This will be the second winter for the 8 for me, but nor the 8 or the Mx-3 had any problems with pests at my grandmothers.
