Windshield Chipped From A Rock $%^&...

OMG Things like this frustrate me!! If it wasn't on the drivers side I would not worry about it... I was on the QEW with a truck infront of me in the lane to the right. Of course a huge rock flies up from his tires & cracks my windshield on the drivers side!

I called Speedy & they came and repaired it the same day. However it is still super noticeable so I have to replace my windshield as it is way to distracting for me when I drive.

Has anyone ever replaced their windshield? Where was it done or can anyone recommend anything. I will probably go back to Speedy to have it replaced but just wanted to know if there is anything better...

Yea, a week after I got my 8, a semi kicked up a rock on the highway, didn't notice, but once I parked I saw a huge crack from side to side. Got a local guy to do it here, he used to race rotaries so he had my vote.. Never been to speedy, I'm sure they'll do you right though

I drove around for 5 months with a 14" long crack on my windshield all through summer this year.

I fixed it recently... after I did my extensive Footman research as Kafka put it... I've discovered there are several brands.

The shops that are selling you the $200 ones are aftermarket glass.
Scarboro Mazda will get you an OEM one exactly the same as the one that came with your car for approx $350 (parts only). You will have to find someone to install it.

As for OEM glass, the ones I've found most popular premium brands are:
- PPG
- Pilkington
- Sekurit Saint Gobin

There is a made in china brand which also is OEM quality (because they have certain ISO certificates). I forgot their name, but it something like 3 letter acronym and the first letter is "A".

A lot of glass is now made in China also.

In the end, I went with a PPG glass, verified Made in USA (Pittsburg, PA), from Apple Auto Glass.

whats the diff between oem and the cheap glass i have? i'm really impressed with the quality of glass in my car. its spotless with no marks that i can see it's way better than the glass it replaced as far as visibility.
is the rock that got deflected from my oem glass going to just go straight thru and kill me or a passanger since i have aftermarket instead of oem? i suppose only time will tell.

From the pics you posted Leesha it appears that the damage is directly in the drivers field of view. I thought that if such was the case then the glass would have to be replaced? That being the case the glass would be covered under the comprehensive rider in your policy.

Yes your right. It is illegal to drive it like that so I will have it replaced forsure with a factory windshield if possible.

Yes but my deductible is $1000 & even if it was $500 the repair at Speedy is $472. I just have to make sure it is the factory windshield they will be using.

Thanks for the info everyone!!

Cheaper glass has a number of small problems that unless you're really picky, it might not bother you. Over time, lower quality glass gets a 'twinkly' look from it from all the small rock pits (though this varies with how and where you do most of your driving). Also, (I've never really noticed this) apparently the optics through the glass are less 'true' with cheaper glass. I've seen some cheaper glass crack at the track when there's already a small crack in the glass (although all windshields will do this given enough stress).
