I am interested in seing the prices you get on either RE-11 or Z1 star spec.
I usually get mine in the D. I am downsizing to 18inchers for next season.

Tires is like fuel economy.
You either get amazing fuel economy, or you get phenomenal performance. You can't have both.
So most people "compromise".

I think of it this way. If the extra grip will help you stop or avoid an incident, isn't that worth the extra cash? Or the extra wear in this matter?

When I first saw the treadwear rating on the Miata, I was a bit nervous and a bit upset. Because I knew I'll have to replace the rubber faster than most people. What I'm amazed about is how easy the tires have worn. And they've provided grip exactly at the times I wanted it.

I now make an effort not to cheap out on the only piece of equipment that makes the rest of the car work the way it does.

Get the most grip you can afford and don't worry so much whether they'll "last long". It's not worth the time to think of it in that matter.

And for the record, the Dunlops are rated at 200 treadwear, where the RE11's are at 180.
Depending on conditions and how you drive, the Dunlop might last slightly longer than the RE11's.

I want something that will grip and last. Are the Dunlops all season or summer? I'd prefer and all season. Even though I have winters...just because of how I drive...lol...I need that grip.

all season = fail

not as good as winter tires in winter

not as good as summer tires in summer

if you want grip, just get some wider extra high performance summer tires

NITTO NT05 is a good choice,but it wont last long

I think you're confused... I just explained you can't have both.
The OEM rubber that came with the 8 is rated as a "high performance summer" rubber.
Moving it to an "all season" rubber would be diminishing the car. All seasons are no seasons.
You'll want to stick with a summer rubber.

The tires mentioned here are all "extreme summer" rubber.

I'd be in for two sets - my wife needs staggered 18's for her 1 series - but it'll be hard to agree on a tire. The stocks have 280 treadwear, not sure I'd be happy with a 180. Was real happy with the stock tire.

As a rule of thumb, anything is better than OEM rubber. You gotta remember those guys are trying to get a certain level of handling for the least amount they pay for rubber.
This being said, alot of manufacturers are very picky about the type of rubber they want their cars being rolled off the assembly line.

I'm pretty sure the BMW 1 series comes with RE050A rubber in RFT. My Miata comes with the RE050A sans RFT.
Pretty high demands on the tire for the level of performance these cars give.

You would do well with the RE050A Pole Position. This is the same rubber I use on my FD. I had to choose these tires at the time because the RE11's never existed. And the predessor was deemed too extreme for a street tire.

Tire tech gets better and better every season. I wouldn't be surprised if Bridgestone and all the other manufacturers introduce a new series of rubber next season.

The Yokohamas I would consider 2nd to the Bridgestones. I've noticed they get hard a bit quicker than the Bridgestones. They also get noiser as the treadwear goes down.
Still a very good tire.
I would easily pick the Yoko's over the Dunlops. But that's just me.

I've been running these this year in 245/45/17. Daily-driven, half a dozen autocross sessions, 3 track days, and 2 trips to the drag strip.

Daily-drivers: Quite fun on the streets. Excellent dry traction, you can really toss the car around and not have to worry about anything. Very good wet traction, this tire spits out water like you wouldn't believe. The grooves are really well setup. Auto-cross: Grip grip grip! You can push these hard and they will still not complain. I find the squealing to be at the perfect spot right before losing traction. They also respond well to over and under inflation depending on the weather and course (I ran them as low as 27-28psi and as high as 40-42). Really can't complain here, excellent autocross tire.

Track: Take the first few laps slowly as usual as they do need to warm up. Once they're warm though they will take you into and beyond your comfort zone -- or at least mine -- without worries. Very responsive, I highly recommend doing a season on these tires before buying R-comps if you've never driven on Rs.

Overall, great tire. I put about 10k of abuse on them this year and they still have a ton of tread! I'm assuming it's because they are stickier, I am sliding around less on them and they aren't wearing as quickly as the 300tw FK452s I destroyed last year in 15k. I'm getting at least another season out of them, maybe more.

For $180/tire, I have nothing to complain about.

For Bang for the buck the Star Spec's.
But if anyone is interested in TSW Nurburgring RF Black Machined Rims Mirror Faced 18x8.5 offset 45 with 235/40/r18 Yokohama Advan Neova AD08 with a 1000 click's are up for grabs (new 3500 I'll take offers), I want to go with a staggered 17's and maybe the same tire or the Z1's (still my favorite tire)

Yep, you're right, but the RFT just ruins an otherwise fine tire. A 1 series with RFT makes a RX8 feel like a Caddy by comparison. Had the car 4 days and sold 'em for a winter wheel & tire set, and now looking for regular 18' tires.

I'm leaning towards the star specs.

About 6 months ago I told you guys that Michelin was developing a new Ultra High Performance street tire.....................Its finally here! The new Michelin Pilot Super Sport should be here for spring 2011. I quote " Born from endurance racing, Pilot Super Sport gives you the exhilaration of driving the best performing street tire in the world"

Everything new happens in the spring... we'll have to wait and see what new tires are available at that time.

I went to the website, and the tire they spec out for the super sports is a 315 width sitting on a 20inch rim. And the tread wear is 300???? That doesn't make sense. I think there might be some descripencies towards the specs... it's too early to tell what's going to happen. We'll see what's available closer to spring.

According to the Michelin website, these Super Sports are lower performance rating than the Pilot Sport PS2, but have much better treadwear.

Upon more research, turns out this is supposed to be superior to the Pilot Sport PS2. The ratings on Michelin's own site is a bit flawed.

I had heard about this tire almost a year ago, and I think if your looking at premium tires this will be hard to beat. In the 2011 Michelin Catalogue it lists 41 sizing options from 225/45/17 to 295/30/21 lol. For the budget minded individual the good old BFG KDW is still the way to go in my opinion.

Order from Tire Rack..or Discount Tire Direct...or someplace online...send to Buffallo NY

Go on a group drive to Buffallo and get them installed....


That will beat any price you will get in Canada...and often is cheaper than the retailers themselves can even buy them. Sucks to be a small Market Often they don't even make me pay tax on them at the border ...
