Warranty extension: 8yr/ 160,000km

FYI to all,

Mazda Canada's website has updated the warranty spec on the Rx-8. If you select the car, and go to the warranty section, it lists under powertrain: 96mo / 160,000km (core).

I only saw it for the 08 rx-8. Nothing about prior years.

If you go to the warranty section of the Mazda Canada website, you will find this snippet buired in the middle of a paragraph:

The 2004-2008 RX-8 rotary short engine (engine core only) is covered for an additional period ending at 96 months or 160,000km.

And the glossary at the bottom provides this detail:

Engine Core warranty: The following components are covered for 96 months or 160,000 km: Rotor Housing and all internal lubricated parts, oil pan, oil pump, water pump and gaskets, seals and gaskets.

So does this mean I get a refund for the 20,000 km that I paid for in the extended warranty??

I think the extended warranty (which I also bought) is for everything else. If your power seat stops working, or the cd player breaks, or you develop some loud rattle, or your taillight fills with water, etc...

Nope. It just meant you got taken in from the rear like a red-headed step-child by the dealership.

Your dealer is wrong---engine core warranty is for all RX-8's 2004 up; I just got my extension info from Mazda N/A this past week.

From the Globe & Mail: (and I read elsewhere that it's for all years from 2004 up)

Mazda extends RX-8 engine warranties
MICHAEL BETTENCOURT

globeauto@globeandmail.com

June 12, 2008

Stung by criticism that Mazda's rotary powerplant consumes more oil than regular four-cycle internal combustion engines and that thinner oil requirements have led to premature engine failures, Mazda has increased the warranty on all its RX-8 sports cars to eight years or 160,000 km.

Mazda Canada announced the move last week as "proof of the company's faith in the rotary engine" and to "show their support of the longevity of the engine."

The rest of the warranty terms in Canada remain the same, with a three-year/80,000-km basic warranty and a five-year/100,000-km powertrain warranty.

A similar warranty extension was made to RX-8 buyers in the United States, where hotter southern temperatures and more traffic (and likely more creative/aggressive tuners) have led to more reported issues with the twin-rotor Renesis engine.

My question is, I have a 2004 that I bought privately and the warranty ran out last May so am I still covered under this new update to the engine warranty?

How to get the stealership to put in an engine for me under this warranty? Does the engine have to break down in the first place? Do I have to go back to the US for this warranty (US import)?

FYI to those in calgary still having trouble with dealers unsure of the new 96mo/160k warranty.

I thought I had a water pump gasket leak and contacted northill mazda today about it. They call twice to ensure they are recognizing the warranty and if any work needs to be done it would be covered.

Nope.

I was at the dealer early last week. Svc. Mgr. said that he had read about the extension on Mazda Canada's internal messaging system, but hadn't seen anything on 'Letterhead". He says this is typical.....

I took my 8 to get serviced at Gyro Mazda Toronto today and the guy at the desk said he'd never heard of the extended warranty on the engine. If they arent aware of it how are we supposed to tell them that we aint paying for warranted item fixes? LOL

I just posted this 2hours after MCI posted it for the dealers. I left this site a couple of years ago because of all the negativity towards my fellow dealers. You have to realize that RX8 represents about 1.25% of the total Mazda vehicles sold in this country. We try our best to stay on top of all the information we get and pass it on when we have it. Tech training on the RX8 represents 1.25% of all the training we get as such. I know that we can not make everyone happy but we try our best. I greatly appreciate the kind words some have posted or spoken about our stores, but it still bothers me when other dealers are publicly put down on this site.

I wasnt putting anyone down at all. Merely making an observation that the guy didnt know it existed. Wonder if it would turn out to be an issue since they arent aware. S'all.
