Shifting to Reverse problem....

Hey guys,

Sometimes I can't shift to reverse....the transmission isn't giving way, so I find that I have to shift to first and then to reverse....do any of you guys have this problem?

Thanks,

Ben.

I find that the reverse gear doesn't always engage when I'm in the gate. I have to go back to neutral, rev the engine, then to back into reverse.

My wife has the same problem on her Mazda3

If I get what you guys are talking about, it's not a problem but a safety feature. It stop you from throwing it into Reverse while the is in a forward motion. Always First with foot on the brake then Reverse. Make sense does-it.

I don't think he's talking about that, because for me, it happens even if my car is not moving at all

@scottish: I'll be sure to put that onto my to do list =] thanks for the tip!

As Maffu313 said it happens when the car is stopped.

Easy fix. After you stop put the car quickly in neutral, pull a forward gear then try reverse that will work 90% of the time. For the other 10% bump the car an inch forward then try reverse again. What is happening is the teeth are not lined up and it wont go, reverse is a non syncro gear. Dont try and force it into reverse or you will do damage over time. Almost every manual trans has that issue from time to time.

I've owned lots of manuals over my years, and reverse is a PITA
