Dodging those Corollas

Eric, it was great meeting you. I cheered for you at 5A and 5B, not sure if you saw me waving the poster! I think you did...
Awesome racing. The other rx-8 (Solomon), looked like his braking and acceleration points were a little off. Also, I feel bad about our cars being so slow on the back straight. The Golf GTI was able to pull away from you
Have you considered going back to a lower final drive gear ratio to gain some top speed? 131 km/h in 5th gear is hurtin... I know you have to set the car up the same to handle all the different tracks. Is the acceleration really worth all that sacrifice in top end speed especially when your car can handle so well in the corners? Just a thought....

Yes I saw you. Gray shirt---right? Or gray colored I recall.
The issue on the backstraight is not gearing but torque. We don't have enough torque. A lower final drive value will accelerate slower. Right now we can use the top of 5th gear about 8,900 rpm as well as 2nd and the car operates in desirable rpm ranges. The problem remains the torque. The other guys (like the VW and Scion) have 1/3 more torque. They will most likely get weight penalties after talking with the folks at SCCA Pro Racing Competition dept.

Hi Eric, we havent met but I run an RX7 at Mosport in the local regional and vintage classes. Our car is a 13B P.Port and only produces about 157 ft.lbs at the rear wheels, and about 270 HP. We run a 4.88 gear with a 1:1 4th in the trans. We pull about 9500 rpm at the end of the straight which translates to 144mph. The trans is an ancient Mazdacomp 4spd box. Another racer runs a Saenz (I would if I had the $$$$) 5spd again with a 1:1 5th, he is quicker up the straight but with about the same top speed. Do you not find the stock gearbox in the 8 is the biggest issue, with the ratios being far to wide to allow the engine to climb through and stay in the power band?

180kmh on a good exit from turn 5 which is 111 mph. There is no way the RX8 race car was only doing 131 kmh up the back straight, had to be 131 mph.
Did anyone get the lap times the Speed Touring Cars were turning??

131.9 mph was our best terminal with the 2009/2010 gearbox and Mazda 5.12 rear end. Running the 5.12 allows for more shift opportunities which allows you more gear selection choices. More choices allows you to try to best put the car in it's most desirable rpm range.
WC rules dictate what we can use (4.77 or 5.12 as an example). We can also choose from the pre 2009 trans or the newer model (which lasts a whole lot longer).
We ran a 1:36.2 on Sunday's race---2nd fastest of the race.
