RX-8 owners event at Mosport - September

Hi guys, I've received an invitation in the mail for all 2006 and 2007 RX-8 owners for an instruction/lapping event that will take place at Mosport in September.

I will be getting more information soon, but just wondering if anyone from the club would be interested.

I will post up more information when I get them.

This event is hosting by Mazda Canada and Driving Unlimited, all day course cost $250 including full day of lapping as well as classroom sessions and in-car instructors.

It is limited to 06/07 new RX8 owners only, I talked to Mazda Canada and they wouldn't even let me go...

It's pretty much like the Kensai Racing lapping days, but it's only be RX8s... instructors are from Driving Unlimited, they have been hosting driving events for Mazda for a few years and majority of them are ex-race car drivers.

Wow, I wonder why it's only 06/07. That's age-ism!

Well, my brakes are a bit shot to be taking the car on the track. I still wouldn't mind showing up for moral support.

It'll be nice to have a few RX-7's out.

When is this happening and I'll make it a point to show up!

2006/2007 only?

I think when they find only 3 cars sign up for the event they are going to have to open it up.

This is going to turn even more people off....

The event will take place on Monday, September 10. (The track is fully booked on weekends for various professional racing activity).

It is $250+GST for a half-day session. (There's a morning session which includes breakfast, and a afternoon session which includes lunch).

Price include instruction from professional race car drivers (the person who I talked to races in the ALMS). The instructors will sit in the passenger side with you on the track to provide instruction. Instructions will be tailored to each individual depending on the experience level of the driver.

I think the price is not unreasonable considering a full day lapping session without instructors usually runs $350 for the Grand Prix track. $250 for half-day with instructor is not as bad as it seems.

The fact that it's on a Monday might be more troublesome, but I am planning on taking a sick day off work to do this.

The thing is, the Mosport big track is much more dangerous and much higher speeds than all other "tracks" in Ontario. I would like my first time there be accompanied by instructors.

So I think I will sign up for this one. We should support this type of event (organized jointly by the manufacturer) so that more of these will happen in the future.

Thanks for the info. Seems a bit pricey, plus having to take a day off from work might be a problem.

Is it still only for 06/07 RX 8s? Fine with me as I have an 06, but I can't imagine it will be a big turnout limiting it like that. Seems odd.

Why exactly are they limiting this to 06/07? Is my 05 not worthy of a track day?

In any case, I wouldn't want to attend a track event organized by Mazda. Seems like an excuse to cancel warranty.

Lots of negativity for something Mazda is willing to help people with.
$250 for a whole day at Mosport track is a deal! Including instructors!
Not many people can say they've lapped a real track at a decent time.

I say Bring it!

Lates,
It's 250 for a half day.

If it was that price for the full day it would indeed be a great bargain

Really and truely, how many RX8 owners are driving their 8s in the way they are supposed to be??? The reason Mazda Canada is doing this event is actually wanting the 8 owners to know how well their cars handle, and why would it be a reason to cancel their warranties??? That doesnt make any sense at all.

If I can take the dayoff, I don't mind showing up to see what's up...

I agree, there are many other manufacturers out there offering performance driving school similar to this one. BMW would be the best example. I don't think they are using it as an excuse to void warranties.

$250 for half a day of lapping might be pricey.
But $250 for half a day of instruction is not bad at all.

Like I said, a full day of lapping without instruction at Mosport is $350.

And Mosport is the only "real" track near Toronto.

$250 would be fine by me if I could attend. But alas - being one of the original 8 enthusiasts with a 2004 model - I guess we just don't count.

I find it really stupid that they would limit if to 2 model years. They just don't have enough owners in the area to call upon to get the turnout.

Look at it this way - we had that Mosport Parade lap a few months back and were only able to get may be what 12 8's out? And that was all years, and FREE.

Mazda has the right idea - just lousy execution.

$250 isn't a good deal period. Instructors or not, when you go to a regular school the intructors are volunteers. If this is aimed at the average driver so he/she can learn that their car can handle, great. Seems like some good marketting to get some repeat buyers. As for those of us who would just like the opportunity for track time, this isn't the best event.

Back when Subaru first released the WRX in the US, they gave away free SCCA memberships with purchase. A few "lucky" owners found out that if you used said membership to participate in AutoX, your warranty coverage was affected.

If Mazda really does want to encourage us to use RX-8s on tracks, they should just say so and those who do track could be upfront about it. I have my doubts, so if I was using the car on the track I certainly wouldn't let them know about it.

Just to answer everyone's conern about turnout and limiting it to 06-07 models, there is a 50 car limit for the event. They don't want a big turnout. I guess.
