If it is around 54mm then it's a 3071 , if it's around 58mm then it has a 3076 wheel in it which might get you to around 350+ whp .
Cough ... really ? Who told you that ?

I know. Since I'm using the MazdaManiac GT3071 upgrade kit, If what MazdaManiac showed on his web is true(300+whp @9PSI), then it is possible to get me there. Also, Kane got 360whp on his 8(ported+3071). Anyway, something around there will already make me happy enough. Plus, I have the meth kit, it might help a bit.
Wait we are totally hijacking this thread .... I retract the statement

If it's a 3071 then it can make about 325whp tops . What size is the inlet to the turbo just before the compressor wheel ?

"1) Power.
The turbo included in the upgrade kit is capable of flowing enough air to produce up to 475 horsepower at the crank. That is over 400 horsepower at the wheels.
However, getting there will require major upgrades to other areas of the drivetrain, including but not limited to fuel injectors, ignition coils, intake and exhaust piping, fuel pump, cooling system upgrades, transmission upgrades, differential upgrades and suspension.
"
and here's the dyno on the web:
and what under the pic
"This was was realized with the GReddy E-Manage Ultimate, running a slightly more aggressive tune with only 9 PSI of boost peak."
And about Kane's 8:

Assuming you do have a 3076 (and not a 3071) then 350+ whp is certainly achievable (just) . A quick measure of that intake diameter would confirm.
If you get 350+ on the first try then you will have achieved something no-one else has so my hat will be off to you .
BTW - see my signature in answer to MMs "400whp capable" claim.

porting
several years ago, when i rebuilt my first renesis (which was my own engine), i had rotarygod do some mild porting on my n/a renesis. I picked up about 10 lb./ft. Of torque across the rpm range and the torque curve stayed flat well above the range where an unported renesis tends to lessen the torque output. In terms of driveability the midrange torque, although only a modest increase, was noticeably different and accelerating from 70-120 mph in 6th gear (3,500-6,000 rpms) was definitely enhanced by no need to downshift to pass.
I am pretty sure pratte will like what you do for him as midrange torque is important for exiting turns with the rx-8.
since then, i have told people that having your engine ported during a rebuild is worthwhile but rebuilding it mostly for the sake of porting is not.

and porting looks good,

Great work joe. If some of the people who posted in this tread divided their post count by 5, it would prolly be the same amount of engines you've built.
How old were you again when you built your first rotary? hahahahaha, how many years ago?
I still remember you workin at good ol CP racing. Last time I heard Chris was working on snowmobiles.....

Hey guys! I have a question..... I got a 2003-rx8 original motor and with 153k/km on it ...I will go for a rebuild and i saw that the rotor housings are the same price as the rebiuld kit ... My question is how do i measure the wear on the housings? or you recomand to buy them new as well? Thanks

One thing to measure is the width of the housing in several different spots close to the wear surface and compare the measurments, also laying the housing flat on a straight surface can tell you if its been overheated and warped.
Update on this engine: Installed it last week but could not get it running over the weekend. Seems the plugs are weaksause and now its super flooded. Gotta love it!
Ordered new plugs today, should be going mid week.

I think the best way it will be to just take it apart first and then i will order the rebuild kit and maybe the rotor-housings, its the first time i will do it. any suggestions(i will use the manual and i watched some rotary-atkins dvd's)?

i have done a compression test on the motor and i have .. 6bar's front rotor, 4 bar's rear rotor(the needle is bouncing evrey 3 times so the wear on the apex seals should be even). minimum is 5.8 bars? or i should just do the rebuild? Thanks!!
