Redline MT90 tranmission fluid good?

Hey folks, I am going to get rx8 in service soon.

Just wondering if anyone have any experience with MT90 Tranmission fluid ? I would love to get a short shifter, but I am worried about the stiffness..

I know Scarboro Mazda has 3 case of Redline Synthetic MT-90 Tranmission Fluid on sale (Per Case 12 Bottles/1 Qt, at cost price $150CDN), and I am tempted.

What do you folks think? If I just change the fluid without changing the short shifter...

Thanks!

What I am thinking about of the short shifter in summer...

I have both of these products. The oil - you will notice a difference. The short shifter? oh yeah! it's very nice.

That's the Axel-flow right? It's a very tight racing feel.

Personally I don't like the MT-90. Doesn't feel smooth and the gates feel a lot rougher than they were before the swap.

I'll be draining it this summer and putting in something else...

Feels a little too thick to me too (!)

I mix in about one-third Redline MTL, makes the BEST shifts.

I put this in my tranny a while ago. i really like it. for me, it didnt make it any smoother for normal shifting, but i noticed right away that all my high RPM shifts were smooth as glass compared to before. Also, people that think its too heavy for the winter, its not. Yes, shifts will be messier MT-90 instead of MTL, but the MTL wont give you the protection you need in the summer. in the winter you arent beating on your car like you do in the summer. I have come to terms with the fact that my tranny will be clunky when its cold. i take my time and shift slowly and often rev match when shifting anyways so its not an issue. also, for every neigh-sayer, there are 10 people that are for this product, even a shop like RPM....if you are basing your desicion on what people say...its obviously a yes for this product then.

MTL is slightly lighter than the MT-90. We have used both in the race car and both work fine. If you find a post about this months ago we had the same discussion (lol). Only reason we brought in the MT-90 was for the RX-8 guys lol, I still have MTL in the race car.

I just changed to MT90 two weeks ago (35k) from the stock fluid.

These is more grinding unless you match the revs perfectly (always try). Until the tranny is warmed up in the morning I always double-clutch from 1st to 2nd as a matter of habit now. Once warmed up, it is somewhat better.

I have used Redline products in the past and have always been satisfied (2 Miatas), until now.

The odd thing is I changed the stock fluid because of some grinding and now it is worse. I may try something else, maybe RP or Mobil as suggested.

The reason your getting the stiffness or grinding when cold is MT-90 is a heavier viscosity than the stock gear oil. Thats why when it warms up its better. With MTL you probably wouldnt have that grind.

Al, I thought both MT90 and stock are 75W90 oils?

They are both 75W90 oils but they have different compostions or they would be the same product lol.

I've tried MT90, stock, and RP Maxgear. MT90 is quite stiff during the cold at startup, but the smoothness after warming up makes it worth it, without the notchiness of the stock fluids. Maxgear I had for all of two weeks, and it actually gave the most buttersmooth shifting I've ever had, but then the synchros all went shortly after... go figure.

I'm back to MT90 now. Works great.

Like any Import transmission I have ever driven, the RX8's Aisin gear box does not like to be shifted with quickly or with force. When you do this all you do is ruin the syncro's and grinding between gears starts to occur. We have replaced quite a few RX8 gear boxes for this reason. No gear oil will stop this from occuring. If you watch our incar race videos, we run a stock style competition gear box and my shifts are painfully slow for exactly this reason. If you want to be able to "bang" gears, you need a T5 or T56 style gear box, they are better designed for that type of mis-use lol.

anyone tried Castrol Synthetic 75W90 on their tranny? They can be had at the local Walmart for around $12/l. I'm also considering Castrol Hypoy-C 80W90 for the rear LSD. Thoughts? The specs seem to meet the criteria in the manual... Subaru loves this combination.

Has anyone tried mixing MTL with MT90? Would a 1:1 ratio be a good compromise?

BTW, what's this used for?
