ON new rx8 owner

Hey guys jut got bought my rx8 a month ago. Now I am not a car junkie, like i love the looks of the car, but I do not know much about the actual interior and such. I bought the car with a couple mods such as a full catback exhaust flowmaster with magnaflow tips (I have no idea what this means, if anyone wants to explain), it has subs and amp and a 7 colour neon lights. I took my car into scarboro mazda and did about $350 dollars of work. I was reading some posts and had some questions, firstly driving the car in winter..will that cause problems? second why does everyone say keep some engine oil in the trunk? and what is flooding the engine? I live in mississauga and toronto and would love to meet some of you guys and learn some new things

Welcome to the obsession,
check your oil bi-weekly at least, 8's do burn oil, don't know if your running all season tires but you will need a good set of snows for the winter even on light snow days, there are many threads on all your questions.
cheers & welcome again!

do not, i repeat DO NOT shut the car off before it has reached full running temperature. You can flood the engine and it is a PITA to deflood...

If you have to move the car say out of the garage to the driveway, always let it warm up before shutting off.

Welcome! Sounds like you got a nice buy.

If your car isn't warmed up to normal running temps, you can rev it up to 3500rpm for 8-10 sec and while reving then turn it off. This will help stop flooding.

Oil - cuz they do burn more than other cars and as soon as the oil light comes on you don't want to be stuck, so always have an extra bottle at least. I go with Castrol GTX.

Winter - they are actually pretty damn good IF you have good snow tires. I'm actually selling my winter set that are pretty much brand new (blizzaks). No more snow for my 8. Msg me if you are interested.

ENJOY!!

P.S. make sure to make it out to some track days...then she will really come alive
P.S.S start reading lots of info on our cars

Welcome! I'm in Mississauga as well. Have you seen the GTA roll call thread?
I keep three bottles of oil wedged into the pass through bin between the rear seats.
Winter isn't a problem if you buy some 215-55-17 winter tires on some cheap 17 x 7 wheels
Hope to see you at one of the local meets.

Or as I do, push/roll it out of the garage onto the driveway, wash it, and then start and let it warmup for five+ minutes as I do the final drying before I back in in again.

Welcome!

And do hit the redline daily.

He may think you guys are joking about the redline, but seriously!

You can't put ANY additive in your gasoline. Use premium, without ethanol, and do not put a drop of anything in it. In order to clean out your engine you must redline to 9000rpm daily. This will prevent build up on your Port's. Some ports only open after 6000rpm and only when the engine is under a load. Reving the car in neutral won't do the trick. Its a little quirk that makes the car even better imo.

yes you can still redline it put it into the manuel setting and well drive it and redline it

the ummm full catback flowmaster exhaust with magnaflow tips...

what do you want to know about it?
its self explanitory .... but simply
its your exhaust from the catalytic converter back some what (catback)
with magnaflow tips you can see these if you look at the rear of your car

though that one doesnt have magnaflow tips^^
it basically makes you car sound different than stock when you drive it

but hey if you have any more questions just search im sure they have been discussed in some way
such as the oil you should put in (you should probably ask someone in your area what is best for your car in your climate if its not already discussed)

the best oil to use in my opinion is castrol GTX 5W-20 you can also go with 5W-30 despite what the manual says.

Another note, the full catback exhaust is basically a pipe bigger than the stock one that goes from the cat to the muffler, not sure about yours but most after market cat backs are made with mandrel bent turns so the exhaust gas leaves with not a lot of back pressure, thus increasing your power a bit, some are made for sound others for performance not sure about yours.

Sure, you can still redline an automatic. You'll have to manually hold it in a lower gear tho' so you don't break and speeding laws.

In your region (cooler) 5w-30 is recommended. As already cited you need to check your oil more often than a piston engine since th rotary is designed to burn a small amount of oil as an after-function of lubricating its apex seals (somewhat similar to piston rings in function).

A "catback exhaust" is simply that portion of the exhaust system that is from the catalytic converter (aka cat) back to and including the muffler and exhaust tips. FlowMaster and Magnaflow are aftermarket exhaust/tip vendors and among the best (although the stock exhaust is quite good).

The "midpipe" is between the cat and the muffler.

Nope, what you're describing is commonly referred to as the "midpipe" between the cat and muffler. The full cat-back is as I've described.

A "race midpipe" replaces the cat.

Welcome to the club ... lots to learn. Do yourself a favour and ready through the DIY section off the main club page. If there is something you want to find out about, don't be afraid to search it out using the search feature. But also feel free to ask just as you did, these guys are great and helpful! And as you said ... go to a meet and talk with some owners ... they're very approachable.

Oh yeah! If you see another RX-8 on the road ... wave, or flash your lights, blast the horn ... it's called etiquette!! The worse thing that could happen is some dumb *** non-club member will look at you funny, but if he/she does not know to come to the club site, that's their problem!! I found this sight the day I got my car back in April ... not hard to find! Everyone is welcome!

I think this depends on the whats your definition of hot...if you are are referring to the engine being hot or the temperature on your meter is hottier then normal.. I would recommend you take it into Scarbo Mazda...

If you are referring to hot as being...there is always hot air coming out of the air-ducts...I think its because the rotary engine is a high revving engine and displaces alot of heat....and because the driver-side air ducts is closer to the engine.. it draws in some of that hot air... I just figure this out at the last meet...lolz..

Just a thought... pls feel free to correct if I'm wrong or mistaken..
