How long can you 'beep'....

Hey guys,

Well, I usually redline the car twice a week - I dunno if that's enough, or if I should do more, but that's a different story. I let the beep run approx. one second, and then shift. Maybe once before I might have taken it between one and two seconds, but no more than that, so my question is, how long can you safely "beep" at redline before shifting? I'm not saying I would ever go past one second, but it's good to know lol.

Thanks and God Bless you guys.

Ben.

I stop when I hear it because then the car starts to rock back and forth somewhat like its going to stall. Probably because I do it in 2nd gear...

Leesha,
That's called fuel cut! LOL!!

We all know these engines can rev, but everything has a limit.

Haha, hey how many times a week are we supposed to redline it to prevent carbon buildup?

You mean how many times per trip, right? At least once will keep a smile on your face. Make sure that the car is fully warmed up first.

If I had an 8. I'd redline each gear then set the cruise to highway speed to save some fuel.

i drag the beep in 2nd/3rd for almost 10sec. That way I know the third port has a good long bellow to get rid of carbon build-up.

I'm trying to remember (8's has been in hibernation since 2 weeks before Thanksgiving)...pretty sure that gives you 2 redlines, and 3rd would take you into ticket zone.

If you always did that to reach highway speeds you would probably not get the ~21mpg that is possible if you granny the car. Maybe 18mpg.

I personally don't care - I managed to get high mileage a few times but it's just not worth it to me...

I try to redlline the car once a trip just to keep it loose. As above, I'll usually carry the RPMs up in a gear (you don't have to floor it, just don't shift it) then settle in at a nice cruise to keep the mileage up.

As for "how long can you beep." In theory, you could drive around in the 8500rpm to 9000rpm range all day if you wanted, or until you run out of gas in a few minutes. Depends if you are still increasing the RPMs or holding at a given RPM.

I've been less able to redline this winter than I'd like. Sometimes it's a couple times a day and sometimes only a few per week. Been trying to beep for longer, too. When I first was doing it, I'd redline and quickly hit fuel cut off or shift out of fear the car would explode. Now I'm able to back off a bit before cut off and maintain beepness for 5-10 seconds. But I want more ... (haven't yet beeped in 4th, think I did in 3rd once or twice).

If I go without redlining it for a week say, can a good few beeps clear up things? ie. do I need to stress about this?

Reving the engine to redline and making the shift buzzer go off will not get rid of carbon or help prevent carbon build up.

All Rotary engines are oil injected and buring oil creates carbon, cant really get around it. I've torn apart race engines that live at 7000rpm+ and they have carbon build up on the face of the engine rotors just the same as a daily driven one.

Now, putting around town and never going above 4000rpm is not healthy for it at all...thats where you get serious carbon build up that can cause seals to get stuck.

I had an old 1985 RX-7 with a carb'ed 12A engine that I would purposely rev as high as it would go just to see what would happen....and it took it great!
In 2nd gear I'd hit the buzzer at about 90km/h which was 8000rpm, but I'd hold the throttle to the floor and it would bury the tach needle far into the dash and it'd get me to about 125-130km/h before the stock ignition system would just give out LOL.

Lotsa fun

Would using an additive in the fuel get rid of the carbon build-up ?

I'm going to purposely ignore RPM's advice, because that little beep is just so extremely rewarding... I smile big every time I hear it.

In reality, thanks for the info RPM. I'll probably still redline her daily (or as much as possible) but it's good to know my inability to redline her in the snow more than twice a month or so isn't going to hurt.

I didn't not recommend redlining everyday...by all means go for it! It's definatly not going to hurt things, I'm just saying, its not a cure for carbon build up.

Grifter11 - I have no experience with additives for fuel to get rid of carbon sorry. Although I have heard of some guys running meth/water injection on their turbo RX-7's having very clean engine rotors once taken apart, the idea is that the meth/water actually acts as a sort of steam cleaner on internal parts. Again I have no first hand experience with it...
