It can't come off! What am I doing wrong?

Drive around the block and get one of those cops that like you so much to help out.
I can't recommend using vise-grips or anything other than just torquing by hand. You might be able to tap lightly, but I'd be careful.

use science...
drive aroudn the block so the engine bay is heated nicely. Then open the hood. take a can of compressed air ($5 or free depending where you swipe one). hold the can upside down, and empty like half the can or more onto the neck of the oil cap only. The neck should shrink microscopically while the oil cap is still expanded from the heat giving you several hundred extra micron's of wiggle space. Hopefully the cap will then loosen easier.

 

WAIT sorry... backward directions....
the oil cap threads INSIDE the neck as opposed to on the outside like a jar....

Spray the compressed air upside down on the OIL CAP DIRECTLY, and NOT the neck!

 

Ok I'm not doing all that...

I still need to do the recall so I just called the dealer and I'll book the oil change at the same time... I also mentioned to them how tight it is... & am trying to get a replacement car while mine is being fixed...

You are taking a can of compressed air, holding it upside down to freeze the oil cap. Since the cap is threaded on the inside.

From science, heat expands, while cold shrinks. The idea is to shrink your oil cap by several hundred microns, while the neck of the oil filler is still hot (expanded).

If the outside is expanded while the inside is shrunk, you may have a chance at removing the oil cap easier.

 

You can't hurt a cap with the kind of freezing done by an upside down can of compressed air.

 

Have you ever tried it? I'll take the easy way out thanks... Or why not just put ice on the cap...???

 

The time it takes for ice to cool your cap down is not fast enough before the neck of the oil filler will also start cooling down.

What you are seeking is a large temperature delta between the cap and the neck portion. The closer in temperature the two items are, the more "fitting" the cap will be. You don't want that.

 

You just have to turn the cap like a bitch counter-clockwise (to loosen hopefully). I know how tight those damn dealers put them on sometimes. Just use a bit more muscle.

There's no special voodoo required to open the cap. Just twist it left (counter-clockwise) as mentioned, HARD! It's a machine, not a baby. What is the dealer mechanic going to do when you bring it over? He'll turn it really hard. lol

If it breaks, I owe you a coke.
