GTA Lapping Days?

Hi,
I know there is a lapping day this weekend but I can't make it as I only have 250km on the clock so far (soooo hard to keep it under 4k RPM!!).

But in the future how do I find out about lapping events near the GTA? I want to get the car on the track as soon as I break it in properly. Do I just wait for someone to post here telling us all about it or is there a more proactive way to find out when I can track?

Thanks in advance.

shoot me a PM man. i attent a few open events (no make/model restrictions) per season and if we can get enuff people (at least 10-15.shouldn't be difficult if i invite a couple of clubs) then we can rent dunville autodrome (close by, fresh pavement, very sik) for a day.

I'm also going to be helping to organize for CSCS's august event at cayuga where the road course will be open, there will be drifting and a time attack competition you can partake in as well. All day and all night racing so it should be fun. Like i said, pm me and i'd be more than happy to give you some info, we need more circuit racers around town

bewarned: you WILL get hooked. Money in wallet will decrease proportionally as well.

Id definitely be interested in finding out more about that, do you need any kind of experience on the track, any kind of certification, I was thinking of taking an advanced drivers course this summer, but I dont know if Ill have time, on top of all that I only pick up my car in a week but it should go through break in relatively quickly.

You don't need to have any training and there will be instructors or at the very least, very experienced drivers there who will go out with you and show you the lines and help you out. Driver's are split into groups based on experience as well.

You don't need to have attended a previous driving school, but it will help you go faster and they are fun so if you were planning on doing so, go ahead and do it.

Congrats on the new car also! Did you get it from a dealer? Which one?

Ive been looking into the BMW Driver Training course, its close to home and the first couple of stages are pretty reasonable. As far as the car is concerned I picked up a new 2006 SE from Downtown Mazda, they only had the one left, at first I wanted Black on Black but once I saw the Special edition in the showroom that was it, I had to have it.

Goeslikestink

How are you liking the SE, should I be prepared to have random strangers approaching me about the car. My parents were one of the first people to get a Nissan Murano in Canada and they got approached all the time, I know the RX8 is not a new model but its rare enough so I thought the RX8+SE might grab some attention. What part of TO are you in, maybe once I get the car we could do a little "Under 4K" cruise.... lol

Oh I also wanted to know if you had the Break Pads replaced before you even picked up the car, I know you had mentioned in another post that you might pursue that and which dealer did you pick yours up from if you dont mind me asking.

Ha ha...I bought the other SE from the that same dealer! How come you waited so long to pick up yours? The rep, when I was buying mine, said the person who bought it was not picking it up for a while.
I don't remember posting anything about brake pads....must be someone else

As for the car itself...it's fantastic. The copper red is the best colour in my opinion, turns heads all the time. Last few days have been great as it wasn't too warm so with roof and windows open you can hear people's comments e.g. "wow", "check out that car" etc. Stopped at lights yesterday I could hear a guy explaining to the girl he was standing beside what type of car it was, and that it had 4 doors, which she could not believe! It's all good. But to be honest people admiring as you drive past takes a bit of getting used to, well...for me it does anyway

Ya the reason I waited a little is just for cash flow reasons, it just made financial sense to wait a couple weeks and pay off some existing debt before I started with the payments for the car. When I put the deposit on my car the dealer told me the other SE was sold but the purchaser was on vacation or something like that.

Oh man you could not be more correct...and I haven't even tracked it yet.
Today was the first day I took the car over 4k RPM...that break-in period was sooo painful!! Reached 1000km on the odo this morning on the way to work, so at lunch went for a short spin. Changed gears at about 6k but OMG what a difference!! It's like I swapped a mazda 3 for a sports car overnight

Back at my desk the adrenaline was still pumping, took a while to calm down. Now all I can think about is the drive home.

All this and I haven't even heard the buzzer yet...I can only imagine what that's going to be like

I am totally hooked.

I was just wondering who told you to keep these cars under 4000 RPM?

This forum did

Seriously, just search "break-in period" and you'll see lots of threads and debate on the topic. Some think it's a good idea some say not to bother, I erred on the side of caution.

Just for the record, and this is engine break in recommendation from Mazdaspeed Motorsport Development:
For a new engine with new bearings:
.5 hour at 1500 rpm
.5 hour at 2500 rpm
.5 hour at 3000 rpm
1.0 hours at 4000 rpm
1.0 hours at 5000 rpm
1.5 hours at 6000 rpm
1.5 hours at 6500 rpm.
In miles that translates to roughly 300 total miles.

Your cars are all pre run at the factory, the only thing you need to do to "break it in" is not go to high rpm when its cold. You can take your car to the track with 500kms on it and drive it as hard as you want. If you really want to be nice to it do an oil change after 2000km for the 1st oil change, or after the 1st track day.

When we got our new engine for the race car I called them to ask, and I quote "those are the recoommended break in specs, but most guys run them for 1/2 hour then go racing"

So i dont have to keep it under 4k rpm for the first 1000km??
I wonder why RB's recommendations would be so different....

Anyway, time to bring the revs up !!!!!!!!!!

Okay guys and girls, here is a total reality check. All you have to do is go to an assembly plant and watch the cars come off the line to the parking area which is usually .5 - 1km away. The car probably is at or near the rev limiter then. The person who moved the car from the parking area to the loading area probably does the same. The person who put it on the boat - takes it off the boat - moves it around the yard at port - moves it around the yard at its destination yard......You get the picture. The only thing you need to worry about with your car is revving it when its cold, after its warmed up you can rev it all you want. Like I said in a previous post, if you want to be really nice to it do an oil change around 1500 - 2000kms for the 1st one, other than that go rev it and have fun with it.

Hey,
Here's a post I posted in the "2 Lapping Days August 7" thread:

Just to let you guys know Toronto Prelude Club is running track school/day at Mosport Driver's Development Track on Sunday, August 13.
Ian Law is running the school

School (includes track) = $250
Track (Guest) = $160
Track (Members) = Go check out the members section
Lunch is provided too
This is open to non-prelude drivers as they are having trouble filling their spots.

I have already signed up and paid for the driving school.

As far as I know they still have room for the lapping only, I think the school might be full, I'm not 100% on that though.

I'd love it if I wasn't the only RX8 there ha ha

More details can be found here:

If anyone wants to really learn how to drive around a race track.....this prelude club opportunity should be taken.

Ive raced on the mosport north track for many years in karts, and have raced the bridgestone race series there as well. It is a great technical track, and although it is tight there is lots of runoff. With a track like this you can really learn proper techniques in trail braking and heel toe downshifting.

Any other takers if there is more space?

What an incredible experience!

I think I'm in trouble....I am totally hooked.

I went to Ian Law's advanced driving school and lapping day on Sunday at Mosport DDT and I am addicted! I absolutely loved every second of the day. It was incredibile...as was the RX 8....I thought I loved motorsports and the 8 before that day, but it's now at a whole new level (just like my drving skills ha ha).

Guys like Kart Racer and KarFiesta warned me a while back that I'd immediately get hooked and they could not have been more correct. I spent most of today just searching for the next lapping day I could attend (all this while in work ha ha). It was soooooo good.

If anyone has ever thought about doing something like this they should stop procrastinating and do it! Some people might be wary of 'damaging' the car but I ran my bone stock 06 SE through 4 hour long sessions without a problem whatsoever...I cannot recommend a day like this strongly enough...same goes for Ian Law's driving school, excellent instructors, I didn't dream I'd learn so much in a single day, and be able to drive so smoothly and quickly by the end of it.

Some people here have mentioned to me that if we got enough people together we could rent a track (Dunville I think ) for ourselves....I would love that. On sunday it was offically a Toronto Prelude Club day, but there were also 4 S2000s there, couple of bimmers, and even one other RX 8 there!! (passion_for_innovation is his Id on the forum, very nice guy).

A bonus on the day for me was I got a few laps as a passenger in one of the instructor's (an accomplised SOLO competitor) 3rd gen RX 7....incredible speed and grip!! I learned loads just by watching his line and braking points.

Anyway, just letting you know that if the club ever organised a lapping day themselves I'd be there for sure!!

Stay safe and smooth.

good to hear you had a good time. That is a great track to learn on! I would have been there for sure but I had an exam yesterday so I was studying all weekend. Me and some friends may be getting a track day together in september, I will let the club know if anything gets set.
