God's Country to Heaven's gate (MT)

Speaking of the Vancouver sea to sky jaunt, I hear tell of a road in the Montana Rockies that is only open in the summer, takes a long way up a single lane road on the side of a mountain to the top. I'm not sure if it is in Kootenay, Lewis & Clark, or Flathead Nat Forest or not. Apparently it happens to be a pretty stunning/ breathtaking drive.

I was wondering if anyone knows of this road and if anyone here would want to make an RX8 trek up there this summer?

I think you're referring to the Going to the Sun Road, also known as Logan's Pass, in Glacier National Park in northern Montana. The Calgary Miata club does a weekend trip over there to Whitefish every year, I did it the first time in '98, and again in '03 in the RX-8 on the return part of my California road trip.

It's not a one-lane road, just two very narrow lanes. It would be a great sports car road if it weren't for all the damn tourists! Spectacular scenery is certain, though.

Regards,
Gordon

I've been on that road myself. I echo Gord's sentiments there. If it wasn't for all the motorhomes, it'd be a sweet drive!

Glacier National Park is beautiful.
I had the pleasure to go through there on my motorbike two summers ago. It was one of the most scenic places I've ever been.

There was also a couple isolated twisty roads (10 -15 km in length) which I ripped up and down 5-6 times on my bike. Those roads are unbeatable on a bike. It was by far the highlight of the trip! It would be just as fun in an 8 in my opinion.

There are a few one-lane roads controlled by a light as they were doing maintenance or construction when I went there last summer. It was my first time there, but I gotta say it's one of the top 3 scenic places I've been to! My Bimmer had CEL when I got back down to the base... must be the oxygen sensor or something! The altitude is insane! A great place for an outting!

Another great ride to consider is the Beartooth Pass - it's a great high-altitude route straddling Wyoming and Montana that's equally good on two wheels as four.

Cheers
