from what many of the guys here say, the aftermarket (GReddy, RB, REAmemiya, etc) net very little perfromance gains (2HP or so) because the Mazda engineers did a good job with the stock exhaust. Even the Racing Beat guys admitted that they aren't able to squeeze that much performance from their exhaust (+3HP) like they were able with the rx7 (+10HP). I think some people found that the aftermarket ones gave LESS performance than stock. From what I know, the MS exhaust isn't supposed to give you any performance gains but does give you a more throatier growl. I think you're probably the first one I know of that has it.

Looks like I pulled a noob and didn't do a search. Here's a link with the discussion on the MS exhaust and a clip of the MS exhaust sound. I guess the only performance gain is that it is lighter than the stock, so you are saving weight.

RB just came out with a racing muffler that saves some weight. You may want to check it out

well the MS exhaust does sound a bit better, and according to the tech's that not only the MS unit is lighter also the structure inside is better-flow than stock!

I have the stock catback with the rp supercat midpipe. It is not much louder than stock, but the higher flowing supercat definitely adds power.

I have a Borla myself. Sounds amazing, and does seem to have a LITTLE more top-end pull than with the stock unit. Could just be a placebo effect, but that's fine by me.

COOL! Well I've tested a couple highway runs on this MS system, and it FEELS like giving me more kick on the high end from 5500 to about 8000 rpm.... and I love the sound since it's deeper but not annoying!

where did you buy your Mazdaspeed exhaust from?

i'm tempted especially if Canadians can buy MS parts from Mazda dealers now.

After doing some research I figured that the most power/response cost effective (my car is leased) mods would be: RP supercat (395USD) and a better flowing air filter, I went for the one Pipercross UK makes (50USD). The only benefit to an exhaust system is a better sounding engine note as well as more aesthetically pleasing bigger exhaust tips.
However I was planning on keeping it I might put an exhaust system that would complement the supercat.

Hey MazdaSpeed 888, does your MS exhaust have a constant roar between 2500-3500 rpm if you are barely in the gas? That seems to be the only thing that bothers me about it.

not really.. sounds more like a R32 skyline.. but only at WOT..

you cant get the G/Z sound with a rotary.. you need a v6 for that...

you must hear a Z with ano exhasut sounds fabulous....very deep and howls ..

while the greddy for the 8 sounds more throaty and 'fast'..
