Dyno Truth
SO I went and dyno'd the 8 yesterday. I went to Redline Performance here in Toronto, they run a regular Dynojet 1800hp model.
Conditions were good. The 1st 2 runs you will see are low because we hopped right on about 30 minutes after I arrived, and the water temps quickly soared to 210. I let the car cool with the dyno fan blowing on it for 20 minutes to get the temps down, and that was the high power run you see on the line.
So results:
173whp at 8250rpm; 136wtq at 5500rpm
That is what I figured for justthe RB intake and exhaust. It was something else to hear the car wailing at 9000rpm in 5th gear on the dyno.

have a read of this thread
https://www.rx8club.com/showthread.p...6&page=1&pp=15
your dyno looks a little bit like the coils/plugs need changing as you should be improving all the way to 8500 rpm

haha, someone linked MY dyno thread!
Yup, I suggest you take a peak at those coil packs and plugs. I know they definitely helped. I'll share a little secret.... 4 out of the TOP 6 cars in my dyno thread had new coil packs.

I have 64,000km on my car, which is 40,000miles. I track the car a couple times a summer, and drive somewhat aggressively the rest of the time.
What kind of plugs do people run in the 8? I know NGK has a nice set or iridiums but they cost big $$$.

173 seems to be on the low end for an 8 on a dynojet, esp. modded. Considering how quickly your renesis heated up, I wonder if there is any truth to Mazda's claims that the 8 can't dyno properly???
What did the dyno cost you? I think I'll try a run this year, see if my MS flywheel does anything. Maybe we can have a club meet with runs.
What do coil packs go for anyways? Plus, did anyone here change their own plugs - damn things are so hard to get to.

What do these numbers mean?
I would put more emphasis on how the power and torque curves relate to RPM rather than absolute numbers.
I doubt highly that this dyno has been calibrated to SAE standards making it impossible to relate the numbers posted to the flywheel HP figures stated by MAZDA. If so, you are looking at over 25% drivetrain losses (ouch!)
It has been shown on numerous studies where the dyno's are good for determining base lines, and then examining differences that various modifications offer. The only problem is that atmospheric conditions, and so many other factors affect the results that you really have to be doing the runs within ideally the same day for the numbers to mean anything with statistical relevance.
The best way to look at the curve is not so much what the numbers state, but how they compare to other similar cars on that dyno.
If you can get mods done and re-dyno'd quick enough, you can even use the numbers to help you justify $1000 worth of mods for 5hp at 8500rpm.
It would be interesting to see how much a 350Z would put down on the same day.
Just my $0.02.

Rotary Powered Decepticon
Must have been fun to dyno the car. Would happen to have a dyno from stock form, would you? That'll be cool to see how much HP the intake and exhaust are really responsible.

Sorry BlueFrenzy no stock dyno. I didn't think to get one at the time.
Rotator - I consider this as a baseline so I can measure progress as I add the RP midpipe and AP pulley this spring. I don't car what the # is because that is subjective and depends on calibration.
Everyone knows the 8 is a road racing car, not a drag car. But nonetheless I am interested to see how things go once I get the new parts, and new coils
BTW - I am going to take my car to Mazda and get the codes read, see if I can get the coils replaced under warranty. I'll need good luck.
