clear corner installation

i was reading the DIY section for installing the clear corners... and everybody is taking out the reflector piece. Is that really necessary, or are people just doing it cuz it was posted???

I think the reflector piece serves two purposes, 1 to cover the amber bulb, and 2, to make the markers more visible for passing vehicles. I don't think they are intended to be viewed from head on traffic anyway. I want to know if anyone here has installed them as is, and does it really look as goofy as the guys in the DIY section say? So if you've installed them as is, reflector and all, lemme know.

I have the right corner light, just waiting for the left one to arrive so i can install them. thanks for any feedback.

I first installed them with the reflector in. The light was reflected side and back and virtually nothing forward. Without the reflector the light is more even in all directions.

I think they were designed the way they were for a reason. I left the reflectors in and have no plan on taking them out.
I think the are designed with reflectors because too much amber light can be seen from them head on. If you were to see a RX8 at night in your rear view mirror on the highway.....the clear lens side markers without the reflectors might look unbalanced as a whole package with the headlamps and running lights.
The clear lens as designed will show amber light from this angle.....just subdued. Just enough without standing out too much. Nice.

Realize that clear corners are winkers (side signals). We are not using them for their intended purpose so this modification makes sense. With the reflector in only half the light illuminates. It really is more functional as a marker with the reflector removed.

So your saying that they are intended to be turn signals?

They "wink" on Japan cars?

Hey Gyro, the pic you posted is with the factory lens right? I was hoping for a better pic of the clear ones turned on with the reflector IN.

Thanks Gyro!!! They actually look fine. I think people that are removing the reflector is just making extra work then

I think people go through those do-it-yourself pages like it's the holy grail, and nobody questions any of the methods, and just follow :D

i don't like drilling unnecessary holes or making irreversible changes myself... even if it is "easy to follow".

Thanks again Gryro, i'm gonna keep the reflector in, it looks fine.
