Hi, I am a relatively new owner of a 2003 rx8 with 115k km. Only mod is muffler and 20inch wheels. I just had the front oil seal changed due to a leak but at the same time had a solid engine light on. THe mechanic said it was a solenoid and a misfire and I should just see how it goes.


When I picked up the car from service the engine light was off. After driving 50m the engine light came on and started blinking. I took it straight back to the mechanic and he said that happend when they drove it too and it threw a misfire code (he didnt give me the exact code). He said they checked it out and they car runs fine and I should just change the coils, plugs and leads soon and not worry about the light.

So I left with a flashing engine light. The light flashed all the way home (about 20min). THe car is running fine with no loss of power. It does misfire occasionally and you get a pop sound from the exhuast but other than that the car is running okay at the moment.

I am just after some second opinions. Should I be concerned with the light flashing even though the mechanic said its not something to worry about at the moment. Will changing the coils plugs leads etc. stop the light?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Change the coils and plugs for sure.
Driving like that for very long can lead to other more expensive issues! Don't wait too long!

You can get a decent set of wires that don't cost all that much......and if yours are original, I would probably do those as well.


Poke around in the vendor section of this site and you can find some pretty good deals on plugs and coils. If you are able to do this yourself, you will save a ton of money.
Seriously...........that's no joke. Coils at about $25.00 to $30.00 a piece, plugs.......at about $20.00 a piece(for decent ones).
So you are up to just over $200.00 for plugs and coils.

It's really easy to do(even if never done it) and once you do it for yourself, you will never pay to have it done again........or at least I don't think so.


There have been people that have been raped for over $600.00 for this.

Hey guys,

So I went to Part Source and got my engine code read there and here it is:

P0139: 02 sensor slow response - sensor 2 (downstream).

So basically the guy there checked it on his computer and said that the second O2 sensor after the cat is slightly failing and there should be no repercussions other than a 1% loss in fuel consumption. He told me that I'm good to drive the way it is since it's not the main O2 sensor anyway.

After checking the price (approx. $298) for the O2 sensor plus labour, should I change this now since I'm garaging it for the winter in a few months, or change it as it is really pricey.

By the way, the light is off now....the slightly failing O2 sensor explains the light going on and off.

What do you guys think?

He's probably right that if it's just the rear O2 sensor on it's way out, near term it won't do much more than hurt your fuel mileage, which is relative at best on this car anyway.

But, as for the $298, last I looked, Mazmart (on this forum here: https://www.rx8club.com/mazmart-88/cheap-oem-rx8-oxygen-sensors-159715/) sell the rear 02 sensor for $115.
As for the labor, I've not done an O2 sensor on the 8, but I've done it on some other cars.. literally about a 30 second job (after you are under the car.) Unclip wire connector, put wrench on O2 sensor, turn wrench, thread in new sensor, tighten with same wrench, re-connect wire.

Of course an open ended box wrench would also work.

Actually you could climb under there and just make sure that the wiring is okay since it seems to be marginal.

So my CAT is failing? Also, in failing to replace this sensor for a month or over the winter, am I causing more damage to my CAT?

Dude, I'm not sure where you are getting your parts from but the upstream sensor is the expensive one. I had a similar problem and had it read by a friend. I went on amazon and bought the downstream sensor for $86.00 and did a trial of Amazon Prime for free to get free two day shipping. Got the part, lifting the car, put installed it myself with a 7/8" socket. Problem fixed in less then an hour and under $100.
