CD player pretty crappy.
Hey guys,
I have had my 8 for over a year now. I am a big music buff. I think the Bose system is good, but the head unit is a pile of junk. I have already had the head unit replaced when it would not read certain CD's (no preference, it would spit out certain factory CD's and burnt CD's). The replacement was good but now makes a funky spinning noise when it tries to read certain CD's and again spits them out. I use to drive a pimped out Accord that had a Clarion deck. I never had one problem with that CD player. Wondering it anyone else has had similar problems with their head unit? Anyone know if its a Bose head unit or are the speakers just Bose?

I had one problem with the CD player. It was a burned CD and it skipped a little, eventually spitting it out and refusing to play it. Other than that, I don't have any bad experiences. I've had trouble with the CD player in the '98 Honda CR-V a few times, but again, it was only with a burned CD. I wouldn't say it is a bad quality in the head unit. It's just 'picky'.

Unit is fine. Never have had a problem. Always worked the way it was supposed to. Responsive when it needed to be. Other times when I didn't need to use it, it cooperated well.
Yeah...unit is fine.

Bose stuff is usually top quality. The stuff in the Rx-7 was very advanced for the time. I don't have an Rx-8 so I don't know about the head unit. Your problems are definitely with the units or your CDs. Sony makes some really great headunits. I have a Sony in my truck that I installed years ago...it still sounds great, has shock protection and will read pretty much any CD (except MP3s because it was before that era :P).

i use whatever CD's i have. I love the stock system. Reminds me of the acoustic wave system my dads FD had. The only complaint is if the recording of the CD is poor quality, it shows in our cars

I'm kidding. Read this thread (the 2nd post is mine).

phony cd reader
The CD Player is definately junk. It won't read somewhat scrated cd's. I listen to alot of music. Other CD players in either home or car stereo's can read right through the scratches, but not the RX-8 CD player. I thought it was just my unit . I asked service about it repeatdly and told them to put a new Mazda factory CD player in. They didn't and tested the CD's which were scracthing in the RX-8 with brand new RX-8 CD players. The CD's were still scratchin and my old 95 Chevy Blazer with the original head unit plays through the scratches along with about every other CD player that is made to this day.
I think it is fishy. Going through the Pain in the A on getting a new one. It is expensive and kinda looks like crap and took a long time. I am going to have them re-install the original head unit and install a CD player in the ashtray. Hope it will work.
