Canadian Pricing!!!
Mazda isn't, people are speculating that the comparison will be made, and thus compare it themselves.
loungeliz, our dollar isn't that weak, it's simple speculation from the Americans that they'll come back strong soon... besides, that inflation means that our economy has been growing, which is a good thing.
base models will come in below $40k if they hope to sell even one. i suspect the full-optioned car would round out in the low to mid 40's (emphasis on low...)
what's the Mazda 6s priced at?? i suspect there will be very little price gap between the 6s and the RX-8...
edit: Fritz_Man, could you tell me of one car that would offer you all this at such a price??
if you could, then i could see it happening... i don't know the Canadian marketplace 'cause i'm not lookin' to buy a car
but unless you can see a competitor at this price level, you won't get that price, sorry bud. (wellllll, at the best a really, really long shot at that price)

I need a $36K with the Sport package (base, with Xenons, 18" rims and larger brakes, DSC and traction control)

Mazda 6 hits $32K Cdn fully loaded. That's why I'd be surprised if the 8 started at $42 (as the thread originally stated) Mazda would have a full 10K gap between product lines - a big no-no for marketing and sales.

Easy, I could do even better and tell you a car offering more (features) at an almost surely lower price. Acura TSX. 17" wheels, 6 speeds, HID, 360W BOSE 6-disc system, sunroof, side and curtain airbags, leather heated powed seats, stability and traction control and a decent 200HP engine. All this for a rumored ~ $34K Cdn price (just above RSX-S but below the TL). A ton of more features than a base RX-8, and very tempting, just lacks the RWD and lsd. 200HP I4 engine is fine, especially since it's already a torquey as the Renesis, an extra 20 ponies/foot-pounds can be found with simple bolt-ons. MPG will also no doubt be better.
If the RX-8 can't stay in the 30's, as much as I'd like it's looks, dynamics, and the fact that it's a RWD/lsd equipped vehicle, I'd almost definietely go with Acura instead.

Considering the TL starts in the $37K range, it's a fairly safe bet. It's rumored to be under $25K USD for the same spec sheet in the States. We should know soon, as the car will be at dealerships starting April/03.
To further justify a mid $30K Cdn price for the RX-8 there's also the Subaru WRX. In Canada it starts at $35K and offers 4 door/seat setup with I'm sure very similar performance.
Are you reading this Mazda???

In typical journalism fashion, the author of the Post article has extolled the virtues of the car based on a price HE SPECULATED! He has guessed at it using methodology used by many on this forum. Valid though the method may be, it does not make for responsible journalism: nothing has been confirmed, and his source is himself. Remember the World of Wheels article? They claimed a base price over 40K. Has everybody forgotten that?
Having said that, I hope that his speculation is correct; I simply find it objectionable that a "responsible" journalist would crow so heartily about the virtues of a car with respect to a price HE MADE UP, no matter how valid the method of making it up was.

More evidence the price for us Canuks will start around $35-$36k
here
It also goes on to say that Canada will only get the sport suspension with "beefier settings, stiffer anti-roll bars and 18-inch wheels" even on the base model. No 16" wheels for us.

Mazda Canada will announce prices at the Toronto auto show in mid-February.
But based on the already-announced American price structure, some hints from Mazda Canada officials and a bit of guesswork, it looks like the 210-hp automatic RX-8 will list somewhere between $35,000 and $36,000 (which should put the fear of God into those responsible for selling the Acura RS-X Type S), while the six-speed manual 250-horse range-topper will come in under $40,000 (which should worry Nissan 350Z's marketers).
Most observers guessed the car was going to come in about 10 K more expensive than this.
There will be a scant 700 RX-8s available in Canada for the 2003 model year, so if you're in the market for any of the above, you had better call your Mazda dealer well before early May, when the cars start arriving in showrooms.

EDIT: Damn, Grimace beat me to it!
Base price in today's Toronto Star:
Wheels Article
Between $35-36,000 for the automatic, and under $40K for the 6spd.
Unfortunately, only 700 cars will make it to Canada this year.

So, I'm guessing that with only 700 cars in Canada, they will be very hard to come by up North. I wasn't planning on buying one this year anyway, but I probably won't even see any let alone test drive one!
At least Kenzie doesn't waste the majority of his article writing about what a great car for the money it is, like the Post writer did.
Still a speculated price, but at least it sounds like there might be some basis in fact for it. Hopefully it is right! Save me 10 large...
But Grim, doesn't this put the car back in your price range?
