Thumbs up BC RX-8 Vancouver: Club Logo Discussion: Round 3

This is a continuation of the following threads:
Club name discussion: Round 1)
Club name discussion: Round 2)

These arrange symbols will be under three categories:
1 - Simplified shape of rotary logo (Inspired by "Polak" graphics)
2 - 3D modeled Rotary symbol is different perspectives / camera lenses
3 - Sketched, or brushed contour drawing of rotary logo

From these basic categories, we have a better cross comparison to start from. Thanks again for all the input, the PM messages and the one on one discussions regarding this project.

Below are the different directions I am going with. Now, although these seem pretty polished, they are not, so don't hesitate to request changes. (Why do I do this to myself? ) Hopefully we can narrow this down to three of four styles / concepts? - then we can really get polished. (I didn't get the 3D model done yet, so what you see is stuff I either created out of photoshop by hand, or grabbing an image from the internet and modifying it to work.

One more thing.... I'm not done this list yet. With your suggestions I hope to advance each category a bit.

Please submit your suggestions here. I look forward to advancing this concept even further! (If anyone wants to submit drawing of their own PLEASE do so!)

Cheers!

************************************************** ***********
Some exterior places that doesn't impede visibility would include:
- The driver side rear passenger window (who looks out of that window anyway?)
- The area immediately behind the rear view mirror, since it already blocks 20% of the windshield.
- The lower right hand corner (passenger side) windshield area might be good.
- The upper center area of the rear window (the blacked out area)

Hey guys, I just stumbled across the SoCal RX-8 club logo in the parts for sale forum.
here's the link https://www.rx8club.com/showthread.php?t=121526
It's kind of the idea I had in mind, but I think we could make it a bit better.

Out of Tim's choices (btw. on behalf of the BCRX8 club I'd like to thank Tim for all the hard work he's doing) I kind of agree with Dan. I like the #2 in the third row. I also think a maple leaf should be in there somewhere. I think it still has room for improvement too. I'll be setting aside a few hours to work on some brush stroke designs tomorrow.

nice work Tim! some good looking choices and it looks like we are definately getting closer. the styles in the 1st and 3rd columns are looking better and it's getting harder to choose now
I like the look of #1 in the first column, I think that fact that it's tilted gives it more energy. #5 in the third column looks pretty sweet too, a wee bit too close to the SoCal one though. maybe a small maple leaf in the centre of the rotor. we could probably get a stronger brush stroke for the rotor shape too. I think that one is very close to what I had in mind and could really look awesome with a little tweaking. great friggin work man!

Red face Thank you!

Everyone's input has been very inspiring, and positive. Thank you you for your thoughts and enthusiasm. I can't wait till we finalize our fabulous logo too! I love all the ideas equally, so... it's up to you guys to make that final decision when the time comes.
Special thanks to everyone that made recommendations, and to my brother, who helped me push some of these designs over the phone tonight. (Cheers Sheldon!)

Here are some more examples for Green 5: (all the time I have tonight sorry)

another suggestion, can we vary the design color, between white and black, to see which looks more viable, since some people, the bacl may not work with the color of the car, and sometimes white will work. for example, tinted windows. harder to see, or another example, I placed my rotary vynils with the maple leaf cut out between the front door and the vent, where we have that triangular section, and it went nicely. but people may wish to try various places, and having 2 color choices would make it more viable for everybody.

Another idea, would be to do something similar to what Polak did, which was to offer color choices to suit the car color, thus allowing the car to be better complimented by the decal.

I am currently liking the redesign on row one, number 2, and third row, number 3.

Just a thought......
Using 'Vancouver' will exclude all other people in BC, and put you in
the same goup as the (we are the center of the universe) Toronto people.

yeah, I know the colors can be changed, but, if we can see it in an opposite such as white, it might give an idea wether it is feasable for other color possibilities

These are really great ideas guys!

When you decide, you should make a Canadian one for all of us, I'd buy one for sure.

letterhead? who'll be writing letters? I think the lease on the club office should come first! wow Steph, you do have some lofty expectations for our little club. I guess demanding of excellence will always yield something good.

I really really like green #5 as well, but it's too close a copy of the SoCal logo. I have a few ideas that I'll be passin on to Tim.

#5 in the green row, if the lettering was more stylized, it might be a little easier on the eyes, just a suggestion, I am not sure what fonts you have available, but the RX-8 seems a little , unfinished in that one

Red face I think I can answer this one, with reasonable certainty.

Unfortunately the logo in general is a little more set in stone at this point. We did a massive review regarding font type and overall presentation, a while back. So that stage of this project is more or less complete. There is a chance that we may revisit this, but it would have to be a result of the logo icon requiring the change.

Of course we would love to! Actually, I'm a bit flattered you asked

Most certainly I assure you, the word "Vancouver" is nothing more then a placeholder for a city like: "Kelowna" or "Hope" (meaning it is just example). Eventually this project will evolve into a BC website, with sub categories for major cities. We started with "Vancouver" because well, that is where this group came from. No worries, we don't plan on excluding other cities. Like Toronto Haha.

If you have any questions regarding club policy, I encourage you to talk to our club Master Chief: "burnaby rx-8".

Cheers!

Wow Tim! These last few additions are friggin dope! I love the rotor shapes of 5b 5c and 5d. I especially like 5d, is there any way you could make 5d's rotor shape and maple leaf in a ververse angle(mirror image) I like the angled view of the maple leaf underneth too, is there any way you could make it slightly less of an angle? Great work mang!

I just got off the phone with Tim discussing the last few tweaks and I want everyone to know that he has been putting in some serious hours on this most nights until 9 or 10. I think he's really put together a club logo that we can all be very proud of. I guess demanding perfection most often yeilds excellence! Bravo Tim!

Well, the effort shows, I would love the 5d version, but the first one on that list is still the nicest, if he could create another one, sort of the mirror of it, for thos of us who would want to put one on either side, to keep the flow, that would be pretty cool, but regardless of what will be done, and has been done, great work.

5D3 is my favorite but I would prefer it without Vancouver.

Our logo - Now Vectorized with Illustrator.

burnaby rx-8:
Completed: -rotate the rotary shape clockwise(to the right) just a few degrees so symetrical centre lines of the maple leaf and rotary shape match exactly
I don't understand: -if possible fill in the missing bottom right corner of the maple leaf(I know it looks like that because of the angled perspective) so it's straight rather than curved
Completed: -I like the font of the "BC" but the font of the "R" doesn't seem to match up exactly, the dash between the X and 8 looks a bit curly too.
Change the R.... it doesn't exist, that "R" doesn't exist. I took the B character and scratch built the R character from it. (Look at the header at the top, you'll see the regular "R" based on the original font).

StefYVR:
Complete 1. Shrink Maple leaf so that it fits within the rotor center, with stem just coming through break in circle.
Complete : 2. Move text to below picture graphic.
Completed: 3. Close the "B".
Can't fully complete: 4. Go with solid white for "BC RX-8" , and solid black for "Vancover".
I agree with the removing the black stroke around the BC RX-8 lettering for vinyl purposes. However, I'd still like to use the black outline for other marketing, where complexity isn't an issue. However, if we discover that the cost and difficulty for those thin strokes isn't too costly, we may revisit this option again for vinyls.

We have to try suggestions, this way we are certain we choose the best ideas. StefYVR, your suggestions, I had trouble making them work for you, due to the leaf disappearing underneath the rotor detail. As a result, I considered layering the parts so you could still see the Canadian Leaf. The result is more legibility, although it is not exactly what you asked for [Let me know if you have suggestions to help me). Also we can't change the "Vancouver" text to white so long as the rotors remain black.

Ok folks, Let me add my own thoughts:
1 I prefer 5D3 2.1 overall, I will build from this one.
2 I like the "optional" placement of the text (good idea StefYVR), for case by case marketing purposes
3 The Text block isn't big enough. I think the leaf and rotor could be slightly smaller, to build a little more central detail.
4 The black rotor looks good, but on the car, you probably won't see it. I propose we print the rotor vinyl in metallic reflective gray, and the text block in a brilliant reflective silver. This way we can mount the image on the inside of the back window.

5 Friends we're going to have to fork out some cash for test subjects of various materials, sizes for both outside and inside... the last thing we want to do is bulk order 2 dozen to find out the emblem visibility isn't working despite it's great design.

We should start looking at prices... in a couple weeks discussion 4 should be complete.

This final phase, we will take the best logo (which was approved by our club president: Master Chief: Burnaby rx-8).

(Discussion 4): the final acid tests: seeing our logo in action on pictures of our cars. Topics of next thread will be: Graphical visibility / and logo placement.
This will give us a sense of: scale, layout, visibility, color, and over all area to conform into.

Also, we will present additional tests of the Logo as a letter head, business card, possibly a club belt (I have a connection), racing helmet application, and last but not least, getting ready for discussion on the much anticipated website imagery.

Everyone's input so far has taken this logo this far! a little more and we're there!!

Cheers!

I really like 5D3, however try moving the whole text block to just below the Rotor/Maple leaf picture such that the stem of the maple leaf just sort of comes between the 'BC' and 'RX' text, without any of the text overlapping onto the maple leaf. Also the "B" in BC, should really look like a "B" and not an "a". Several of my friends that are not rotory guy looked at the ideas nd thought that is said 'AC RX-8'. After taking a secondlook, i see where the confusion could come from. Just sme constructive feedback.

Hey Tim, that looks really great. I like everything about it now, but if I were to nitpick about it I would:
-rotate the rotary shape clockwise(to the right) just a few degrees so symetrical centre lines of the maple leaf and rotary shape match exactly
-if possible fill in the missing bottom right corner of the maple leaf(I know it looks like that because of the angled perspective) so it's straight rather than curved
-I like the font of the "BC" but the font of the "R" doesn't seem to match up exactly, the dash between the X and 8 looks a bit curly too. if you could clean that up to make the font of all the text look uniform it would be awesome

other than these minute adjustment in my books we have a winner
