Sounds good! where are you going for your oil spray?
I think ill be alright as well.... ill basically be going from my house (in new sudbury) to Laurentian University. My major worries are snow in my driveway/first 500m down my road and the parking lot at school (its a dirt lot and ill be there for some day 10hrs and if its snowing ill be screwed to get out!) other than that im on the major arteries of the city.. lasalle and the kingsway. For backup i got a fold up shovel in the trunk haha

Heh yeah, all I can say is, take it slow on all the campus roads. And do whatever you can to get your hands on a parking pass for a paved lot. :D
A collegue of mine works part-time at a car shop (somewhere on the east end of Toronto, but I don't actually know where); he offered to get me a rustproof job. Anyway, he's not a Mazda specialist or anything, but he does all of his car work himself through the shop, so I'd take his word on generic work like this. We'll see how it goes.

hahaha! i'll be sure to take it easy there.
Q:Whats more embarrassing than sliding into a ditch?
A: Sliding into Ramsey Lake in front of the Laurentian population (3:1 girls to guys...not good in this situation)
PS- The guy at the tire shop told me i wont be needing studs since i'll be on the major arteries of the city... he said ill get annoyed of them before i'll actually need them. For $100 i'm thinking of getting them anyway.... is it necessary??

I've had some experience with studs on winter roads, and would really recommend you thinking of them. The biggest advantage is on ice. Even the plowed roads-Paris and Kingsway get that layer of ice the plow doesn't get rid of. Also the early morning black ice. The studs make a huge difference. Stopping, turning corners(steering) and keeping from going sideways especially going up a hill(typical rear wheel drive)
That extra traction when stopping will allow your ABS sensors to get a better read of your wheel speed and prevent premature activation giving you more control.
Tires can only be studded when they are new so, if your going to do it-do it now, you wont be able to next year. Believe me, you'll be glad you did and you'll know you did all you could to protect your 8 for the winter.

I appreciate the info! The guy assured me i wouldnt need them but your comment had some key points i cant shrug off. I have to put in perspective the fact that if i hit a snow bank, i got a nice bill to fix my car. but the $100 for studs that will most likely stop me from hittin the bank is worth it. I have an appointment friday the 19th to get them installed on my car, i'll make sure to call and get the studs put on this week!
much appreciated

Winter tires went on FRIDAY! Studded and ready to go... and if anyone was out lastnight (sunday the 21st.) you would have seen the roads were glare ice. I didnt know how my car would go but i took a ride to the gas station. The guy at the counter told me more than a few people came in telling him they slid through intersections that night.. i didnt have a problem at all. The car was well planted, stopped well, and if i wanted to i could release the back end for a never-ending power slide. got them on just in time!!

Heheh, sounds like you're getting in the groove callan. In the end, it just boils down to staying alert during the bad weather. When the sun comes out, you'll be glad you kept the car out for the winter. :P
As for me, I still haven't put the winter tires on. Then again, it was 15C here this morning! I know I made the right choice this season. :D

I bought mine used in 2007(it had never seen snow and was basically brand new then), it's seen every winter since. No major mechanical problems or major rust up to this point. The disgusting amount of salt we use in this province(north and south) is starting to take its toll on the car. I would say I have minor rust in the usual spots (rim of wheel wells, some exposed bolts and suspension components underneath). I oil spray every year. The main body of the car (floor etc) is pretty much rust free.
If I stopped winter driving it(considering this) it could easily be restored to like new condition.

Nope, not me-mine is still sleeping for the winter. I did see a red one like mine-in fact had to check the lic. plate to make sure it wasn't last weekend.
Hoping to get mine out fairly soon, probably easter weekend if I find time.

No, I'm downtown, and the 8 is still in the garage sleeping. I might put the battery back in it today though..
BTW Techno, if your new to the 8 you might want to check this post. Some good info
