Tempetyres - How is this package so cheap?

Tempetyres - How is this package so cheap?

Hey guys.

Just curious. How can this package be so cheap?



As some of you may know, i'm up for new tyres. Considering they may be $300 a pop , thats $1200 for new shoes.

The tempetyres package includes rims AND tyres for $1400. For $200 extra I can get new rims?

The only way I can see how this would work is if the tyres are those plastic ones off tricycles.

i probably know too much about tempe tyres....;-P
but as far as i know.... it is a very popular model, they have alot of stock and they have been trying to get rid of those wheels for a while now, hence the price (and mainly because they are able to bulk order, so they do get a good price to start with). believe it of not, i can get alot less for that.... you need to call and find out which brand/model tyres it comes with.

mogley, the tyres that Tempe usually uses for those packages are Nankangs. They're really cheap and budget tyres and the general concensus is that they suck.

If you dont drive your rx8 aggressively or track the car, then they're not too bad - especially if you are on a budget. It does wear out quickly though so yeah, Gomez is right - you get what you pay for.

As for the rims - the StarCorp/HP rims are good quality, and the price seems about right. Tempe's great, they have an extensive range and always look after me You can easily knock out another $100'ish from that price or get better tyres even.

Never ever compromise on tyre quality.

Why buy a car for its handling and then stick it in ugg boots?

Safety is also a consideration.

Sorry mate, didnt mean to sound condescending - while I have never tracked with Nankangs on, nor have any of my close track-day buddies, most of us have had Nankangs on cars when we were younger.

I had Nankangs on my first car (Ford TX3 Turbo) and after upgrading, I hadnt looked back since. My _personal view_ of Nankangs are that they really are substandard and it is really worth paying a bit extra and getting some of the mid-range brands (like Kumho's for example).

I'm actually speaking from personal experience and that fact that many people (including Tempe tyres mind you) will agree that its a (much) lower quality tyre than other brands across the range.

I'm no expert, i'm just speaking from experience.

Wasnt thinking you were being condescending mate, I just dislike brand name snobery. Its like people who will only wear Levi jeans!

I have to say that I personally think there are only 3 types of "performance" tyre. Everyday ones and the kind that you can take on the track and R-Compound. They are priced accordingly. I am sure people tyre people wont tell you they have no evidence to back up their claims or will I be hearing from Tom Cruise?

They all have their wear, speed and grip ratings.

Didn't Motor or one of the mags run a test last year with some fairly offbeat tyres...and there were surprises??!!

the new nankangs are alot better made than the earlier ones. so are the current range toyos. from memory, the current range nankangs are made by someof the more-popular-and-more-expansive brands.... yes, you get what you paid for... the brand name... most of the times

I definately don't want to compromise on tyre grip. In everything that I want to do on my car I want it to be moderate.
Moderately good tyres and moderately priced rims.

The set I linked to did seem to have cheap rims which I like the look of but probabaly need to negotiate in terms of tyres.

The price hike as you go up the food chain in tyres is a bit like cars and indeed most products where branding, etc has a part to play. The increase in price is usually inflated over the increase in performance and utility because the branding is seen as a value-add.

There's always some bargain buys. It just depends what your budget is (i.e. if you can afford a wider range of tyres, your choices multiply).

I bought my wheels and tyres from Tempe Tyres. I got the Nitto extremes with the rims I bought, I got them because of the tyre width being 335 where as every other manufacturer only does 345's in 20inch wheels. At $300 a corner they are not too bad, I blamed the tyres for some poor handling I was having but then later found out that my rear camber was out by about 1.5 degrees (Lesson is to always get you alignment done after a wheel size change.)
Any way there are always compromises to tyres, some better in the dry, others in the wet, some last longer due to compound etc etc. So work out what you want from a tyre and read up on it, then rather than speculating, call Tempe Tyres and ask them which tyres are being offered with that package and look for reviews on that tyre.
The ad did not mention tyre brands from anything I saw.

Mogley, I like those rims. I think the white would look nice on a WB 8. What colour car do you have?

As Eric says, you can always ask for more expensive tyres if you want.

After forking out $300/tyre for Pirelli PZero's 'cause they were on special with the rims I bought, I have to say that I have a little more respect for the potenza's side wall strength.

Lol yep Ezzy...235...I was driving a dragster there for a second.
Do Toyo really do them....I could not find another make other than the Nittos.

How are the Toyos, I am looking for something a little more grippy.

It was some water on the road...honest.

The Nittos are fun to have and are predictable (hence you saw what you saw), but I would like some real sticky tyres so I don't have to have a set for track and set for road.

Yeah - a real wet day it was too...

Next time we get together you're welcome to have a drive of mine and see what you think of the PS2's. I think they're great, even if I risk being labelled a brand snob with more money than sense.

oops... i meant the nittos....
not sure if toyo makes 235 for the 20's... but from my past experience, the toyo proxes were made of harder compound, ie. less grip but long life.

meh.. if you can afford it, why not....
have had michellins before, great tyres and the pirellis are awesome tyres too (and pricy.... almost **** a brick when i found out the replacement per tyre was for my last set of 20's )
