Interestingly, I had a chance to speak to the engineering manager for APS (Air Power Systems) last night. They market the Unichip here in Australia and do turnkey upgrade Turbo systems for WRX's, XR6T's, XR8's etc. A very professional outfit they are.

He's had 35 years of experience with forced induction, used to work with Garrett, been in R n'D for years and absolutely loves axial flow superchargers! His eyes really lit up when I mentioned them to him......unfortunately, he has done no work in all that time with rotaries! He did say that APS doesn't mess with the closed loop area of operation when they tinker with the the mapping of an ECU......todays generation of cars with their self learning ECU's will change the WOT settings as well if the base closed loop area is fiddled with. It's really opening up a can of worms if you go there he reckons.....far apart from the legality of tinkering there.

And he says 13.2:1 is the AFR you should aim for Hymee.......! Get that 60ft under 2 sec's

Regards, Gomez.

Closed loop is where the computer is continously adjusting the injectors fuel delivery to maintain a stochiometric mixture. I.e. the "perfect" air/fuel ratio. Modern cars do this in "light throttle" and idle. I just have to watch the logging on my data logger to see that.

Open loop is when you are at "WOT". The computer just looks up a predetermined fuel delivery quantity and ignition advance for the current RPM and TPS / Load requirement.

Thanks Gomez. There are currently 2 problems I have with Axial flow. And Phil (with Mega rotary experience taught me to aim for for a Lambda value that is a little leaner than that. Can't give too many secrets away, can I!

Cheers,
Hymee.

Ah taka, good to see you failed stochiometry, too :D

I missed that lecture, but never knew until it all suddenly popped up on this forum.

Chief Stochiometrist Hymee, do your stuff

Some-one please step in if I run astray. Okay.....closed loop is the area of engine operation that car manufacturers reckon a normal city drive takes in. Idle, gentle acceleration up to normal driving speeds, decel....the driving Joe Average does on the way to work. Mainly 25% throttle/ or cruise. In this area of driving the ECU (engine computer) is programmed by the manufacturer to run at an air to fuel ratio of 14.7:1. This is the magic air to fuel ratio that will give the least amount of emissions and allow the catalytic converter to last the 100,000km it is required to last by law.

Best power from an engine is obtained when the Air to Fuel Ratio is at 13.2:1.....but some ECU's are programmed to drop the AFR down to as low as 9:1 at wide open throttle (WOT), too much fuel, but that helps keep the exhaust temp down and helps protect the cat. See, the manufacturer is all about legality and cat durability.....not necessarily best power. This is where aftermarket computers like CZ's can come in and re-programme the car to make best power when the car has mods, or simply make the most out of a stock car at the cost of cat converter life.

Regards, Gomez.

Back on topic......The word on this car is that it will be at the next Tokyo Auto Show in early November. Available (in the States at least) from first quarter 2006.
It is basically a Mazdaspeed Rx-8 with a supercharger and 19" 5-spoke wheels. It will have roughly a 25% hp increase, and a 33% boost in torque. In Red or Titanium.

My nitrous system has a modified nasal piece which is adaptable to the injection system of the 8.

By day it relaxes patients, by night the 8 is just a blur

He's full of **** otherwise I would know.

Knightsport do offer a SC kit though but is 200+kW ????

Americans are full of ****.

Besides Mazda wouldn't bother SC'ing a 8. They would turbo it like Turbo Mx-5, Mazda6 MPS (oppps!)

while the person who started the other thread about a supercharged rx-8 may or may not be full of crap i thought i should make one point here in his defense. he did not say he placed an order for one. his first post in that thread says he was at the dealership placing an order for his 2nd rx8,this time a 6speed hi power, and saw this supposed sc'd 8 there in the garage. his story is that it was there after having come off a local track from testing. but he never said he placed an order for one, only that he had seen it.

Thanks zoom.....Yeah, I started this thread just after Troys first post.....at that time all he had said was he saw a S/C RX-8 and he'd ordered a six speed...!

The fact that the car he ordered wasn't supercharged didn't become clear until later on...

I haven't given up on this car yet....!

Cheers, Gomez.

Easy I have access to Mazda's Media site.

Work for Mazda.

And we get Mazda's mule cars down in NZ for testing.

For example a Twin Turbo RX-8 ?????

Hmm, I though that was the quad rotor RX-8. It is so easy to see from the photo's. j/k Please excuse my sarcasm.

The point it, it is just as easy for you you to state these things as it was for they kid in the US who started this whole thing off.

BTW - Mazda's media site? Why would you get easier access than the "public". I thought the whole idea of media was to publicize things, not to hold secrets?

Cheers,
Hymee.

Hi all,

They have an internal network site that no one external can see. I know this for a fact and this is how they know most of the things about the problems in the US cars. Once they find a new bug in the car for example in the US they watch if it hits in the Australian cars also.

It would be interesting to see what real information is in that section of Mazda's intranet.

Regards
Phillip
