slight vibration

I am getting a slight vibration in my vehicle. It seems more aparent on the freeway doing 100kmph while the car is warming up. ( the on-ramp to the freeway is within 5 minutes to where I live)

I wonder if there is anyone can explain why or has had similar experience.

The vibration can be felt in the steering wheel as well and it feels like it is coming from the rear wheel section.

Possible reasons could be rear diff or rear tires???

My car will be going in for a service (30 000 Km) in about 1 to 2 months but I want to work out the source of the vibration before going in as it may be difficult to replicate at the dealer.

If it were front and rear wheel balance, the vibration will remain after tyres warm up but still have the balance checked on all 4 tyres,

or

Cold weather causing an "out of round" tyre situation which will come good as soon as the tyres warm up. Uneven tread wear (scalloped or feathered tread wear) may exacerbate this as well as the age (mileage) of tyres.

Also check and alter your tyre pressure and monitor if there is any difference, try say 4 psi lower first and then 4 psi higher than what you currently inflate the tyres at.

Probably wouldn't hurt to warm the engine before a freeway run,however, does the vibration stop when the engine is warm?

Agree with JoeB... check your tyre pressures. Check rear tyres for uneven wear and scrubbing (maybe one of the rear wheels is out of alignment).

Try swapping your wheels around front to rear to see if that changes things. You could swap left and right rear but that will put your directional tyres around the wrong way so I wouldn't do it for long, nor on a wet day.

It is definately more pronounced when cold.and barely noticable under normal conditions. So it could be the cold weather.

However I might get it looked at at a tire place.

Hymee do you know a good local dealer with up to date calibration equipment?

Sorry to bring up an old thread but SKC did you figure out what the issue was?

I just had my car in for a 20K service and they balanced and rotated the wheels. I didn't notice the problem until i got on a freeway and now at around 104km/h i notice a vibration coming from the back right wheel (i think).

I have two theories, one is that they stuffed up the wheel balance (because it was fine before the service) or two that the wear on the tyres is uneven (none obviously visible) and by switching the wheels front to back its now causing an unbalance that may eventually wear itself in (not that i am prepared to wreck the tyre waiting for that to happen).

I am taking the car back to have the balance checked but the problem is i can't test they have fixed it until i get on a freeway.

Has anyone else had issues after switching the wheels front to back?

The vibration is still there. Going in tomorrow and will get the dealer to arrange a wheel alignment and balance...hope this helps.

A mate of mine had a similar problem. Can't remember if it was suspension or bearings to blame, but the route cause was some DSC OFF action that resulted in a close encounter with a median strip.

No it wasn't me

I did notice that they rotated the tires as well. The tire noise has halved as a result of rotation balance and alignment.
I would have preferred the tires not to be rotated as the rears had more tread.

I wonder if the rear tires transmit more noise into the cabin. Now that these tires have moved to the front the noise has reduced....so in my case my (now) front tires could be faulty (out of round or wavey)

In my case i had no problem until after they rotated and balanced my wheels. It has to go back on Monday. I think i will ask them to rotate them back to how they were and remove any weights etc that were added during the balance.

The vibration has returned with a vengance this time.

After Wakefield I developed the vibration. I went back to the dealer who balanced and rotated the tyres but it has not helped. In fact the noise has become greater since the suspect tire was on the front and when it got rotated to the back it seems to transmit more sound through the cabin.

Over the weekend I was driving along main beach on the Gold Coast and i thought I was being followed by Harleys. I looked around to have a look but ohere where none around...it turned out that it was the tyres on my car making this terrible noise on the newly laid tarmac.

According to the dealer, my tyres are scolloped???. They said it will wear out however, I have travelled at least 5000 km on them since the problem resurfaced and I cannot see it going away.

So at this stage I may have to bear with the discomfort until the tyres need replacing.

My only concern is that the vibration may cause an adverse effect on the suspension components.

Since it is now on the back, it might be time to practice skids and circle work. That should wear it back to round.

I have certainly noticed the tyres getting noisier as they wear. I am past mid-way through my second set, and they're getting noisy -- but I don't notice any vibration. If you had any little track "incidents", you may have flat-spotted a tyre slightly and that would contribute, but otherwise I would have thought balance/align/rotate should fix???

How does your dealer define "scalloping"? Unless it stems from track work, I would argue it is a symptom of poor alignment

How hard do you reckon it would be hard to flat spot a tyre with ABS? I guess in a big spin if the wheels actually locked up.

The tyre has done 35000km with enough tread to last another 10 000km at least.

I had one notable off road incident on the track however, that was corrected by steering back onto the track. The only hard braking moments I had was at the last turn where I would gear down to 2nd and brake but once again the DSC would kick in going into the turn before lock up.

However, it is possible it may have flat spotted.

May be a session at Qld Raceway may cure the problem.
