Semi-Slicks??

Being clueless on the issue of tyres, I was wondering has anyone on the oz forum
thought about using semi-slicks for dail driving.
Are they extremely dangerous on the road? I mean, I wouldn't get to crazy on the road when its raining anyway.
Or is it cost thats a more inflicting problem.?

Cheers.

Not for daily driving please. I don't think even Sydney will have such a good road on the motorway to allow you to safely use semislick in the wet. 5m increase in stopping dis is 5 m - it is a matter of life and death.

You probably need to change tyre every 10000km with semislick why brother then ?

I don't even use the semi slick on the track if raining.

Its interesting that Subaru have decided to fit semi-slick Bridgestones to the MY05 Sti.
Guess they have extreme confidence in the capabilities of their AWD system in wet weather conditions.

It's not a semi slick?

To me it looks like a slick with a few occasional grooves cut into it.
If it isn't, what defines a semi slick?

i think they are called street slicks. that way if you go the the drag strip you can run them in the street legal class.

What's called a street slick?
Are you referring to the Bridgestone RE070 tyre or are you defining what a semi slick is?

No idea about the shelf life, they have only just been introduced onto the MY05 model.

I imagine they wouldn't last very long if you were trying to extract the best performance from your Sti (ie. launching at 4K RPM).

No, unfortunately they don't have a choice in the tyre either.

Street Slicks, Semi slicks, Street legal race tyres --- there are too many times.

Usually the manufacturer define S-tyres, don't they?
We just go by what they told us of that particular tyre is aimed to achieve and is designed to do.

Some street tyres have better performance than S-tyres - so category is not important. RE55 is JDM tyres and I may think of one guy importing them.

I heard RE070 wear out faster than RE010 we had nojooc (if I remember correctly you used to have a DC2R too nojooc)

BMW M3 CSL comes with optional semi-slick (Pilot Sport Cup) R compounds. Doesn't stock at least two of the Brisbane owners driving them in the wet!

You mean it is an option??

I thought they already comes in Sport Cup tyres. hmmm Well the sport cup is really semislick - did Dean Evan said in one of the earlier Motor mag that the Cup tyre is a second faster than normal Pilot Sport at Wakefield?

Actually DC5R Taka, and I don't know about the tyre life on those stock tyres, I changed the rims to 18's two weeks after I bought the car.

Bad memory Taka :D

It is off topic and nojooc you are going to hate me. But my friend with DC5R just tune his car with Hondata chip and he is getting 127kW at the wheel or about 162kW + at the flywheel...

Don't hate me I am still going to beat him at Sandown next Tuesday though.

Nothing really special Taka...... Aus spec DC5R is really the USDM Acura RSX-S motor with only 147kw, JDM model is 162kw standard.

BTW, the DC5R is no longer sold here in Australia, it's been replaced with the DC5 Type S.

154kw standard now.

Well he has the Aus spec 147kW and tweak it to 162+ and more - he said stock Aus spec DC5R dyno at 100kW and he is 27% more - he thinks that he car is about 170kW +... he wishes.

What I am saying you might have given up a car that could spent $2500 for extra 25kW... However, nothing can compare with driving an RX-8 right

Yeah the 154kW Type S will be nice but is it a much heavier car though?

Yeah I got rid of it because it was getting more common, plus seeing all the boys in Chi'town with one sort of made me want to lose the riceboy image.

No not really, I see 8ABY 8 in Chi'town almost every night, plus a few others, but most of the 8's are not that ricey, yet.

With my DC5R, I went to the point of removing the rear wing and the badges, just to "de-rice" it as much as I could.

Have spoken to the tyre guy and a few of my mates re: semi slicks and daily drive.

You know. There are few that can be used. RE070 and Pirelli corsa.

They should handle ok in wet but their thread life is usually half of say RE040 and Pzeros

RE070 is only around $400. cheap slicks?

Not really when you're only getting half the tread life.
Okay if you're going to keep them for designated track days.

Sure...

My 8 is not a daily drive and I am thinking ... what the hack - just keep the S tyre on. When it is raining then I just drive the other cars.

hmm...

In that case, why not?
Unfortunately I don't have the luxury of two cars anymore.
