RX8 v.s. Type R
G'day Guys,
I am not here to start some big arguement here and I have read a couple of stories in this forum about RX8 v.s. Type R on the street.. etc. And recently, I have just come a cross with a video clip from a friend of mine which shows that a Type R passes a RX8 on the race track. Theoritically *on paper anyway* the RX8 should be a faster than a Type R and has been proven by Top Gear and Best Motoring International that RX8 has the ability to match E46 M3 on the race track or leave Type R behind to collect dirt.
Now I am just curious how come the RX8 got taken out Type R? And does anyone in this forum own that particular RX8? If so, what happened on that day?
Once again, not stirring up anything just like to know why and what happened that's all. Thank you all in advance.
Ciao
P.S refer below attached link for the footage:

Old argument.
JDM DC5 Type R 162kW with 1100 kg and Brembo
Australia Type R 147kW 1150kg and no Brembo
JDM RX-8 184kW with 1350kg
Australia RX-8 177kW with the same setup
JDM DC5 is a lot faster due to weight and better suspension and brake. RX-8 Type S is way too soft. Modified MazdaSpeed 8 will handle much better but it really depends who drive it.
Not Australian models though. I think Australian DC5 will be at least 3-5 seconds off the pace of the JDM DC5. RX-8 though is much closer.
Plus when you see the footage the driver on both instances did not drive in the racing line as much. I think Honda support Best Motoring... look at S2000. I get to race a S2K at Sandown but I will not think it will be THAT far behind.

um b/c when you look at the performance of a car it is on paper...cars can't drive themselves..you need a driver for that...and not all drivers are created equal:p that's it pure and simple. one driver was better than the other.

It'salways more about the driver unless both are pro's.
The other weekend I was on some fast twisty roads hanging on the tale of a friend in his evo feeling really good about it. He was trying to pull away but couldn't.
Then I look in my mirror and there is another one of my friends in his 100kw corolla ascent (only mod rear swaybar and whiteline springs) sticking right on my tail. I could not shake him.
The difference is he actually rallies another corolla and so has a lot more skill behind the wheel. He was just pushing his corolla to it's limits where as I do not have that skill with my RX8 to be able to do the same.
But hey I was keeping up with the evo so I was very happy anyway.

My intention was to find out a car like RX8 has the ability and performance to match E46 M3 on *Test was conducted by Top Gear using the same professional driver in a very similar condition and same track. Please refer below listed link for information Top Gear Result and yet was not able to keep up with a Type R.
This might be comparing apple with orange but what I was trying to figure out is that if we were to put the same driver on the same condition and two different car, in our case, the AUDM RX8 v.s. AUDM Type R in the wet weather. The RX8 is a RWD, has a 50:50 balance and a power to weight ration of 7.63kg/kw where as the Type R is considered to be the world fastest FWD little nugget with a power to weight ratio of 7.82kg/kw. On the paper itself, wouldn't you say the RX8 should come on top of the Type R?
Really?! I didn't know that Best Motoring support Honda. Humm.. maybe I need to bring out all the VCD out and review them again.
Scenario for Taka, Army RX8 and all, if you were to do a hot lap in your 8 and a type R. Going full out without holding back like what Top Gear does which one would you think it will come on top? I think this is the simplest way of putting it.
BTW I still haven't found out who owns that Red RX8 in the video clip? Anyone?

Being a past owner of a DC5 Type R and now an owner of the RX8, I believe that stock for stock, with both drivers of equal talent, the RX8 would lap a race track quicker. The difference would be marginal, but the 8 would still come out on top IMO.
Throw me behind the wheel of my DC5R and then the 8, and I reckon I'll be able to reel off a faster time in the 8.
Just my 0.02c.

Am not sure what the point of the question is. Ultimately, many subjective factors come into play in real world comparisions, vs theoretical performance. But even more cofusing is the fact the Top Gear 'league table' you quote has the NSXType R (not the DC5R). Given its specs and mid-engine config, that is to be expected.
The DC5R is, IMHO, a fairly 'hostile' pocket rocket. By that I mean it is intended for a quite specific and narrow market. By comparison, I would suggest the 8 is spec'd and intended for a broader market, and naturally there are compromises. There's no question in my mind the 8, if equally tuned in both suspension and engine, would probably eat the DC5R, and I am sure there are forum members who will prove this at some point. But what is the point? Perhaps a more relevant real world comparison is a stock 8 vs a stock Type S, as they both aim for the same market segment.
I'll chance my arm with a challenging statement: in real world comparisons, I would always expect a well-balanced RWD to outperform a similar Pwr/Wt, balanced FWD!

I have always thought that a stock RX8 would be quicker than a stock DC5R but this was discussed not too long ago here and some people were telling me that it's quite close!
I guess the power bands play an important role too - fair enough both cars need to be pushed to revs higher than bob marley on dope would have gone, but maybe the weight and torque band of the DC5R makes up for a few kW difference? dunno....

Even my girlfriend driving my car has kicked *** against a Type R. Plus she was granny shifting. Those extra few revs pulled away from a standing start.
In a controlled area i have also taken a type R and the driver was dressed pro but didnt have the goods. Im no professional driver my self. I can change gears fast though
