RX8 test on race track

Tested the RX8 at Oran Park in std form other than our new rear muffler. lap times of low 53 sec on the sth track with quickest a 52.9 sec. i was driving and on the same day only did a 52 sec in a R34 GTR. not bad for the Mazda.

L&L - You missed his birthday by 8 months

Ric, nice to here. I would love to able to compare my RX-8 to what I did with my previous GenIII at Qld Raceway.

How are the tyres looking

Cheers,
Hymee.

Hymee the tyres are a little feathered but still good as i only did 4 laps. i must say the tyres let the handling down. need better tyres.

Ric,

So apart from going to slicks, what would you reckon would be a good choice?

Cheers,
Hymee.

What isw it with the tyres? They must be test drive tyres ... they're not too bad early in life, but they turn to crap soon after.

Tell me please Ric, what pressure were you running in them? I don't like them and I'm slow at putting the miles on at the moment - so that makes me cranky too

guys . set the tyres to 40 psi for the road. that is if they are the **** bridgies from new. slicks would be good but really an R conpound tyre is all thats needed for the track with std suspension. or with better spings and shocks.
the car had good balance on the track but is way to soft. desperately needs sway bars, stiffer springs and more bump and rebound in the shocks. you could do this and still have it user friendly for the street.
alot of people are using falken r compound tyres now as they are cheap and good.but the best are the dunlop r compound.

Ric - Great advice!

So the Dunlop R compound (and the Falkens) - is that something you would normally get in a semi-comp? Also - has anyone looked into track rims? i.e. is the RX-8 rim size something easily obtainable from ROH etc?

(At least I could fit my 4 slicks in the Commodore. Semi-comps would be the go for the '8 then)

Thanks,
Hymee.

Ric, I'd have to agree with you regarding the sway bars. I think just that mod alone will make a huge difference, the car needs to be a lot flatter around the corners to get some decent turn in and exit speed happening.

This is the first mod I will be making once I work out what diameters to use.

They do make a considerable difference. Hopefully Ric is going to be able to install the JIC coilovers I have ordered in the next couple of days and we'll give you all some feedback on how it transforms the 8.

Are coil overs street legal. I'm sure I heard talk some years ago along the lines of them being illegal for street use. Can someone enlighten me.
