Rx8 Piggyback Now Available

Ric Shaw Performance in Sydney has developed and tested a piggyback ECU for the RX8. It is fully adjustable via Windows software package with options to cater for turbo or supercharged conversions. This adds to the product list of springs, sway bars, exhaust, brake kit and 3 piece wheels currently available

Ric Shaw, Does your piggy back computer come with any fuel and ignition mapping adjustments which increase performance? Can you provide any more info about your product?

Talking

Great work but we would need to have you answer every question about your product from A-to z in order to feel comfortable enough to consider a purchase .

Dont get me wrong however we need proof of product.

Could you do that for us.?????

Ric

There was a survey on this forum a couple of months ago. It seems many of the members are IT guys. Therefore we need information, spec sheets etc -- we've all existed on such a diet of, er, bullshit, some of which we have produced, that we're ALWAYS sceptical of new claims

I'm very interested in finding out more. Is there a Ric Shaw website?

I may need to take a little drive to Ric Shaw Land

Ain't that the truth! Most IT guys are not good at taking things at face value.

No offense Ric, but you're gonna have to prove it.

Ric Shaw Performance know what they are doing and what they are talking about they have been in this game for plenty of years..

Im sure they have worked on many of my friends cars in the past and to say the least are the number one Rotary experts in Australia, better yet they are 10 min drive away from my place.. actually driving past tonight on the way to Indoor soccer.

I have never met Ric or any one else over there but i have heard alot about them and with much respect even though he is going to have to prove what they have come up with to the general masses im one that will believe what he says.

Ric i will come past as soon as i get my 8 (Feb 10) for a chat

And by the way i am also a IT guy LOL.

Regards
Phillip Parisis

Guys

I am currently running and testing the piggyback we have developed on my own car which is a manual with a cat back exhaust . The system wires into the factory loom to provide total adjustment of fuel and ignition maps. A built in map sensor is used for forced induction engines. With my 20 years experience in tuning rotary engines I have achieved positive results.

With the current dyno problems I am unable to provide realistic figures but am currently working on a solution to provide honest results on gains made using this system.

Any suggestions on how I can provide the test results you guys want?

Ric,

Actually, if you go to the "Aftermarket Performance" forum and then the "Canzoomer" forum, he's also developed a piggyback ECU (he's Canadian).

But he's also devised a way to defeat the dyno "limp mode" problems by moving the ABS sensors in the rear to a spot on the rear where they're fooled into thinking they are not moving (just like the fronts). It apparently works long enough to get some dyno pulls in.

Canzoomer seems like a nice guy, so he might be willing to help you on the dyno issue... then again, you are a competitor in the ECU market.

But it can't hurt to ask.

Oh, and BTW -- dyno graphs of before and after a good ways to get everyone the results. (he's got some graphs there actually)

Found it:

Plu'n'Play?

I would like to ask how the wiring joins the factorywiring?

Is it plug in or do you have to install a connector to the existing wiring? Plug in/out is important if you want future warranty work.

Great work Ric. For Aussie RX-8ers, the future lies in what the local market can produce. Importing everything from Japan or the States is great for those who can afford it, but it's not for everyone.

Some 1/4 mile or even just 0-100 times would be good. Some 2nd gear acceleration comparisons could be useful too.

RIck great work.
Iam pretty sure that all canzoomer did to defeat limp mode on the dyno was to unbolt both rear wheel sensors intact and tie them out of the way with zip ties.
That way he could get accurate readings.
However this is only possible for dyno runs for up to 30 seconds as limp mode would still kick in after that time
Please give us Aussies your impressions of the power improvements felt with your piggybhack unit installed.
How much off the pace are we with our standard tune?

I just got off the phone with Ric Shaw. A very helpful and an honest guy. The piggyback system he is developing sounds promising and is already producing results, but it's still early days. Accurate power figures are not possible at the moment until a dyno/limp-mode work-around can be found. In the mean time, a seat-of-the-pants comparison with emack's canzoomer stage 1 mod should be possible when it arrives in about a week.

Give him another week or so and more info should be coming to hand. Watch this space... I will be.

Good work Ric!,

I was planning on doing something with an eManage system. Is that what you are building your controller with?

We put a 'scope on the wheel sensor outputs the other night to see what is happening. Without being able to proove anything, we feel the wheel sensors are what are known as passive devices. This means it should not be to hard to repeat the signal from one wheel to another. Like I said - it needs to be proven.

Cheers,
Hymee.

guys, yes Canzoomer has help me with advice on dynoing and thats great, he is a smart cookie. i'm on to it with the G-Tech 0-100 and working on the dyno figures. just dont want to leed anyone astray. remember it is passion that is the driving force here with us rotary mechanics/race drivers.
can anyone give me times from G-Tech runs they've done?

stock with 4500 kms on clock.

3 runs in total, 14.9 @ 99mph, 14.8 @ 101mph, 14.9 @98mph.

With a better launce, i feel capable of a 14.6 and will be using bp ultimate next time. Will do more tomorrow.

Good deal Ric, glad Canzoomer could help. It's nice to see the RX-8 community working together.

Good luck with your projects!

Hi Ric,

What target AFR's have you been aiming for with your fuel controller?

And how have you been measuring it?

I am working on my own OBDII logging software, and have a CAN interface. As you might know, the RX-8 has a wideband O2 sensor in the exhaust manifold before the cat. It also reports the output of sensor via ODBII. OBDII also tells me if I am in open loop or closed loop (just as a sanity check).

On a steady cruise, the closed loop in the RX-8 seems quite effective at maintaining the lambda very close to 1.000, so that equates to 14.7:1 AFR for petrol. Right on stoich.

When I do a WOT run, and it is open loop, it drops down in the low 12:1 range. I even saw it drop into the 11's at one point, which is quite rich.

BTW - Another ODBII thing I was watching - the temp of the cat. It is not hard to get it to over 1000 degrees C.

Cheers,
Hymee.

Kas , i have not done 1/4 mile times as yet. leave me with it.
Hymee , the a/f target is 12.9/13.0 and this is by an Auotronic 4 wire meter i use which is part of my dyno for logging. i also put it in the car to check on road.
regarsless of a/f and 0-100 or 1/4 mile times the engine feels sweeter and more responsive.
i'm still tuning and testing.
