Hmmmm, I was thinking about a speaker upgrade (at least) just the other night. Had all 4 doors open with the John Butler Trio pumpin'.....the original system seemed to run out of puff bass wise at around 20 on the dial.

Since I bought the Pov Pac, I've got a 6K window to work with.....should be able to get Strontium Rare Earth Unobtainium Drivers for that :D

Cheers, Gomez.

We must have an audio head here in Oz somewhere?

Gomez,

Am not sure what Kev listens to, but I have learnt through experience never to assume questionable taste coincides with technical ignorance. In fact, the reverse is quite often the case. A guy I went to uni with has become a pre-eminent speaker designer, but for many years he argued fervently that Sherbet's "Howzat!" was the ultimate test tune

I hate to be thought of as a guy listener - erk!!!

If you're serious about some new stuff in the 8 and want something special, you can go pretty deep into your pockets...

I was looking into AVI Sound http://www.avisound.com for drivers and xtant for amps http://www.xtant.com

The big problem is the signal source :-( I was poised at a $14K spend, but the crap head unit makes it a complete waste of time. Until someone puts out a really good console option that will take a high end head unit, there's no point in tossing the bose.

I have been considering an all out attack on the audio - possibly installing second H/U or something like one of the dension units in the boot...

Right off on the other side of the audio arena, I just got one of the little Altec Lansing iPod speaker jobbies today - surprisingly good sound sitting on the desk while I'm tapping away!

Oops, you're right! My sincerest apologies to Kev!

Kev...that stuff is way out my league, I'll probably just carry out a speaker upgrade at first and see how that sounds. Maybe spend a grand?

Tell you what Gomez ... Spend $2K and you'll have something that'll eat the Bose system and you can do it all with Alpine ...

SPR 694's in the back and SPR 176 splits in the front.

Then go for something like an MRV F450 amp.

Top it off with a Bazooka (or like) sub that fits relative to the amount of boot space you want and you'll be set. (nice thing about the prebuilt tubes is that they're normally powered and a bit of creative work with power and audio couplings + a bit of velcro and you can always get your boot space back - down side is their performance).

Alpine do a enclosed 8 inch powered sub - the SWD 2000, but I'm ignorant of it's performance.

You'll just need to be a little careful with the signal coming out of the head unit on the 8 when you push it into an amp. From memory, the V12 Alpine amps have no trouble taking the higher voltage output signals.

Remember to shop hard and consider discount US car audio web sites.

Pretty much everything I've mentioned would be a simple(ish) screw in job for a long day or a weekend.

Oh, one last thing, only use top quality signal, speaker and power cables and be "EXTREME" when it comes to making certain you've got good earthing.

Thanks Kev! That kind of advice is invaluable, and the reason why this forum is my homepage!

You've inspired me to investigate further.......I'd previously read good reviews on Bazooka's, but hadn't considered one for the 8.

On a related issue, I've read a number of threads where guys have had issues with rattles/vibration in the doors after audio upgrades, can you comment on this?

Thanks, Gomez.

The doors shouldn't rattle if done right, but there are some very bad installers out there. It's just a case of careful workmanship.

Vibrations are another thing entirely though ... poor fitting of speakers, not using the normally supplied mounting gaskets, dangling wires and poor clearances are all potential sources of annoying vibrations.

There are some excellent deadening materials you can buy in small stick on tile like sheets that are a must in the door cavities (imo).

http://www.dynamat.com/ have some very specific bits for the car ... kits for entire doors as well as kits for the speakers in the doors.

A good install will make all the difference.
