RX-8 oil recommended by Mazda

Hi,

I spoke to the RX-8 guy at the dealership where I got my car regarding the type of oil to use. He informed me that after discussing the issue with Castrol Australia, Mazda Australia has decided to use Castrol Magnatec motor oil, 5W-30 grade. He told me it was a combination of a synthetic and a mineral oil.

My local Super Cheap Auto shop only had Castrol Magnatec in 10W-40.

So I'm off to look for some of that oil over the weekend.

Donald,

I went in to Cars Plus to get some oil. After reviewing the owners manual with one of the shop assistants...page 8-15, the table 'Except Europe' clearly indicates that 10W-30 covers the temperature range for the majority of climates most of us will be driving in. This oil viscosity covers the temperature range from minus 28C to plus 40C.

North Queenslanders and Northern Territory owners would probably require 10W-40 or 20W-40 (or even 15W-50 or 20W-50) to cover the highest extremes of temperatures during the summer.

5W-30 covers temperatures from minus 33C to plus 42C, so I don't see how it could give the best performance in the Aussie climate.

My dealer told me to bring in a container and they'll fill it with "the special stuff that they get in a drum".

Any on the wizards out there know the formula for "special stuff"?

I'd be a little nervous about playing with visc of the oil in the engine. This is my first rotary,

Sounds like it could be a nice blend of 5W-30 Snake Oil...

After the last few days of temps in SE QLD, I'll think I might go for the straight 40 grade oil
