I think another guy on the Aus forum HAD one of these fitted to his car and complained about rough idling and excessive noise, so be careful.

As for pricing, if it's US$325 shipped, it's a bit on the pricey side, a Greddy or a HKS unit should set you back around $400 AUD.

The Greddy is available locally whilst the HKS has just been released in the US, so be patient and wait.

Personally, I'm waiting for the HKS myself.

Good luck with it.

I heard on the US forum that in some instances you can actually drop power by fitting that particular intake.

Which one, the HKS or the Rotary Extreme?

The Greddy/Trust CAI setup can be seen on the following link:

http://www.trust-power.com/mazda/rx8.../airinx_b.html

I was originally going to get this but was somewhat sceptical about the filter's location (exposed to the elements) and length of intake (too long, afraid throttle not responsive enough).

Are you guys talking about the Rotary Extreme intake or a replacement filter for the stock airbox? I have the intake (which replaces the airbox) and it goes fine. I payed US$360 (I think), but by the time I paid shipping, GST and Duty, it came to about AUS$600 in total. It's for sale if anyone is interested. Nothing wrong with it, just too loud for where I live.

The problem arisis stasis1 that it needs a good hear seal around it that rotary extreme can provide. Not to mention it is the only CAI mushroom that comes with a box. IMPO any CAI mushroom without the seal box is defeating the purpose of the intake design of the car - there is a tube running in front of the air box and have a valve in it, which opens at 3750rpm. With no air box meaning it is open all the time.

I think it is worthwhile and I suspect there is not much different in the end.
Because:
1. It is already a good design stock.
2. You can just change the element.
3. Even so people dyno the car without air filter, does not gain power (that is according to Gomez's search, I am right this time? )

So I guess you are after noise, go for RE CAI and R magic straight pipe from manifold to catback. :D

Actually, you can still retain normal VFAD operation without the stock airbox. I have. You just need to reconnect the VFAD vacuum tube.

Here are some photos of my intake. The sound proofing is my personal mod. It reduces the sound a little and also seals the heat shield better so that no air is sucked in from the engine bay.

When I say noisy, it is mainly because I have a Hymee exhaust. That thing can also be quite loud when you want it to be. The intake only adds a few extra dB, but it's enough. An intake or exhaust by themselves is acceptable, but both is too loud for me.

stasis1,

Shipping was US$70. The Intake was US$260 back in January. (I re-checked the RE website.) The other costs were GST (10%) and duty (15% of intake+shipping+duty). Like I said, A$600+. I plan on hopefully going FI soon, so I'll sell the intake for A$250. PM me if you're interested.

Sorry for the slow reply, I'm overseas at the moment.
