Question about Flashing

Hi, I live in NZ and purchased a couple of months ago a slightly used RX-8 imported from Japan. This is the Japanese type S which is similar to the Aus and NZ hi power model which brings me to my question. From what ive read the the Jap model has a tad more power 184kw compared to 177kw, now if i take my car in to my local mazda dealler and get him to re flash my car will i end up with less power? Does the power difference come from the ecu or is it in the cat Any help would be appreciated, by the way i am really satisfied with my car and really enjoy it!

I guess the power is in the tune as a cat will only affect your emmisions not your mixtures. a little more air-flow through a cat isn't going to give you that much more power.

The power difference will be due to a different tune. If you get reflashed with a NZ map it is likely you'll have reduced power.

Most Mazda service centres claim they do it automatically so you'll need to give them a specific instruction NOT to do it.

Good luck and enjoy.

I wonder what the version of the flash is....

I met someone in Hong Kong who claimed to have a JDM Type S from the HK dealer and the flash is the F flash that we have!

Can you access to a CAN scanner for the Calibration ID code...?

Humm.. maybe you are also speed limited to 180km and reflashing with our flash will lift the top speed limit.

I guess the only way to find out is take it to Mazda, to get the id code, i have no other access to a can scanner.

i guess it might lift the speed limit but i dont want to sacrafice power for top end which i don't really use be it only a small amount of power but it all counts a!

You may be better off finding a specialist rotary mechanic to service your vehicle.

I guess the speed limit is deep down in the PCM and the flash may not touch it. Well are you willing to test it after you flash.

To be honest, dynoing some Japanese Type S yield the same figure as the US spec. So I guess there is not much difference. Anyhow, if no prob, I will advice against a new flash.
