Purchasing a RX8

Hi All,

I've been surfing this forum on and off for the past few months, learning about this 'sensible' sports car and today finally went into a dealership to take a good look at a RX8. The sales was reluctant to give my wife and I a test drive but in the end she 'managed' to score one for us (geez thx)... Anyway the test drive went well and my wife and I both liked the smoothness of the Rotary, the gearbox/drivetrain was very firm and smooth plus the chasis felt very solid. Not sure we'll like the petrol consumption though (which is nearly double my dc2r).

Anyway about the price. They have some 05 stock left (LP + sunroof) which they've stickered for 59990 - citing a 7XXX saving... (yeah ok). I'm of the belief this is a very ordinary price (we're nearly halfway through 06 and they still trying to move 05 stock?!). Nevertheless they still tried their best to pressure us for a deposit, citing how they've gone to the effort to give us a test drive... Now my question is, how much should I be aiming to score an 05 model for? I told them low 50's and they said it was impossible - even if I shop around. They also wanted 70k for a revelation model and 66k for an 06 (all LP+sunroof). Anyone have any recommended Melbourne dealers who they've had good experiences with? I'm just thinking if I can't score a good deal on an 05, I'll save some money and buy an Accord Euro with all the fruit (sat nav). Still be a very sweet ride and probably more economical.

Thanks in advance.
Andy

Buy the Honda.

Just kidding.

Timbo's the guru on new prices but from memory you should be able to get an '05 for mid-$50's at least. The Revelation is a ltd edition so discounting on that will be harder.

If you're worried about fuel - buy something else. It's the price you pay for the rotary experience. You either think it's worth it or you don't.

Hi Andy

Welcome to the forum....glad you've found it interesting.

Well, you will use fuel in the 8...Mazda's cited average of 12.6L/100k combined cycle is spot on, in my experience, with 14+ the norm in urban driving...and people have sold their 8's because of this. So, be certain about this before you move.

That said, you should be able to get an 05 build LP with sunroof for around $56k OTR. That's what others have paid in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane...and that's what you should pay. There's a proviso...this assumes you are a cash buyer. Be stalwart, be firm, be prepared to go to a few dealers...and be prepared to walk away when they're not coming to the party.

We have a Honda Accord Euro as well. It's a good drive, but nothing like the 8...however, it does average around 9L/100k

14+ is Canberra driving Timbo. Try 16+ for Melbourne driving.

I think there is no difference between a late 05 stock and a 06 stock. I will say hell why not an 05 stock and save a few quid. Unless, you want to trade it in in 2-3 years then it will become a factor

That's 'cos you redline every change, taka

Oh, revoholic, I meant to add that I'd start with any other dealer apart from that one. "They" gave you a test drive....well, so what!

Hiya all...
After 3 years of blood sweat and tears, I have finally got my hands on an 8
I got a Revelation with tint & strakes for 62.5k drive away. (in Brisbane)
I figured that was pretty good. Gives me a few dollars to spend at the house of Hymee...

Cheers.

Thanks fellas, ok so 56k is probably the most I can aim for... I'll keep that in mind

We've already decided we're not going back to that dealership as we don't appreciate being pushed around.

MadMAX: 62.5 sounds like a pretty sweet deal, I love the keyless start feature

My 0.02c
Late 05 stock (ie. MY06 build from October onwards) doesn't sell for the same discounts as the MY05 builds. Was told this by every dealer I went to in Sydney before I bought my car. Unless they were all having me on (which i wouldn't totally discount). So only the true MY05 builds (pre October) are selling at factory discounts.

And the reason is exactly what Taka just said, because there is no difference between the late 05 stock and the 06 models. And insurance companies differentiate all the 05 built cars as MY05 and MY06 too. They have the new non-ribbed leather and the rice additions (Bose logo on the speakers, various trim upgrades etc). But if u want one of the new colours (like I did), there's no choice unless I wanted to wait around for next year's clearance.

So point of that post?...the 05 clearance stock is true MY05 stock, and will have minor differences to the late 05 stock and the current 06 stock.

In terms of spec, you are correct, but (and if you know car dealers they will admit this) the manufactured year is the manufactured year is the ...!) and when it comes to trade-in time, an 05 build car built to 06 specs will still be price downgraded relative to an 06 build car built to 06 specs -- even if they were first registered on the same day.

revoholic, I also meant to add that early April is not usually a good buying time (with an exception, possibly, for run-out 05 stock). Dealers will usually have been most keen to deal at the end of March (end of month, end of qtr) and again at the end of June, although any end of the month is better than early in the month. It may pay to be a little patient, but that depends on the number of 05's still around

Go the 8..the Accord is nothing when it comes to the Mazda...I sold my Accord Euro..16 months old to buy the 8. Sure the fuel is more...but as the engine ages your fuel economy will improve...that's what I have found with mine.....5,600kms old now...I got mine for the mid $50's and wouldn't even entertain paying anymore. Really you can't compare the 8 to the Honda...they are so different...they are not a sedan. I looked at the new Honda....for a facelifted car they don't really do it for me...now if they turboed it and gave it better firmer suspension..then that would be good...but really if you are tempted by the Honda..drive the MPS Mazda 6...... I love my 8 and am glad I made the change...good luck with your shopping and remember the line from the Castle...don't be afraid to say "You are dreaming" when the dealer mentions list price!!!!

WhiteRain: did you buy a white RX8?? please do show some pics! How much did you end up paying? MY06 05 build or 06??

And thanks timbo, good point about time of purchase. I kinda had it in the back of my mind that I'll wait till the end of the month to strike. But end of June sounds like a better idea.. Though by then buying an 05 would be kinda silly unless I did get low 50's.

Rotor Convert: Cheers mate. Without having driven an Accord Euro, I can still guess the chasis isn't anywhere near as sweet as the 8. I wonder what price a revelation will be come end of June.... hmmm

Yes I did. I don't have pics yet, they'll come soon.

I'd prefer not to post up the price I got it for..my friend did that once with his VW and caused a **** stir with his dealer and the entire NSW network. Just tryin to keep relations smooth between me and the guys who are gonna service my car.

It's MY06 built in 2005. I didn't really care about trade in value or resale, as I plan to keep this car for a good 5 years and at that point, built late 05 or early 06 won't matter squat, especially for private sale.

But I got white, leather, sunroof, and some $8000RRP worth of options (i seriously took out half the catalog) for what I think is an excellent price.

Coulda got $2.5k less if i sprung for an MY05 model. Shame they didn't come in white.

Welcome Dan,

People have posted here that owning an RX-8 like being in a big family. Since rotary is unique - we are a group of unique owners.

People who considered - just imagine how wonderful group of people you are associated with when you handed the check to your dealer.

Looking for Polish

I went to buy the polish that I have been using for many years now only to discover that the manufacturer is no longer in business. Hence I'm trying to find out if there are any bottles left out there on shelves. I would appreciate it if you would let me know if you come across any in your travels.

many thanks
Chris

But be careful with your thread title. I had to look twice and make sure there was no 'a' before 'polish'.

However, I quite agree that a good polish is essential.
