Not just another Engine Light!
Greetings All,
I thought I would keep you all posted on my Engine Light saga. Just incase someone else comes across the same thing (and I hope no one does).
January 2005
- Sunday - Engine Light comes on upon starting RX8
- Monday - Engine Light is off when starting before heading to work.
Next Weekend
- Sunday - Engine Light comes on.
- Monday - Engine Light still on. Take RX8 down to Mazda. Hand over the RX8 for the day.
- Result: Reprogrammed Computer. No problem codes. Light is off.
2 Weeks Later
- Saturday - Engine Light comes on again. Goes off mid-afternoon.
- Sunday - Engine Light comes on again. Stays on.
- Monday - Engine Light is on. Take RX8 down to Mazda again.
- Result: Reprogrammed Computer. No problem codes. Light is off. Mazda to call Mazda Head Office.
Next Day
- Engine Light back on. Take RX8 down to Mazda again. Mazda have the car all afternoon.
- Result: Mazda called Mazda Head Office. In the end, Spark Plugs faulty. Wrong heat range. Spark Plugs changed to Range 6. Should 'solve' problem. Still no problem codes.
Next Day
- Engine Light back on. Take RX8 down to Mazda again. Mazda have car all day.
STILL IN THE WORKSHOP
Am I the only person with a problem like this?! I mentioned the Cat the other day, they reckon nothing is wrong. The only reason I persist is because I'm on holidays and can afford to take the car, back and forth. Otherwise, I'd be extremely crappy cos it was effecting my job.
I'll keep you all posted...... I wonder if a letter to Mazda Australia would do anything!?

Who did you bring it too....?
Have you try another one?
My money still goes to the catalyst ... Gomez want a guess?
If Mazda had called the head office - they will take care of it. The Mazda guy I met last time - they are extremely keen people and they will send people to the dealer to look at your car. I shall not worry.

Hmm, I'd have a serious discussion with the Service Manager.
I think this has been raised before, and was a dicky cat converter -- maybe search and see.
May also be a buggered sensor somewhere, which trips at a given temperature.
You could always call Mazda Assist

BTW, I'd question the fitment of the hotter RE6A-L plugs. These are normally reserved for fitment in very cold climates or fitment to cars that are getting fouled plugs 'cos the owner is tooling around like an old granny. To the best of my recollection you are the first person in Australia who has reported having these plugs fitted.
Good luck Grandma,
Gomez

Car comes back from Mazda that afternoon. Mazda Aust have stated there is a release about to come out about a possible engine light issue related the level of oil. This doesn't effect the low oil level lamp, just the Engine Light lamp. WEIRD?!
Took car home.
Next Day
- Engine Light back on. Saturday morning so I drive all weekend as Mazda said 'Bring it in on Monday if it happens again.'
Monday (Today)
- Engine Light still on. RX taken to Mazda and handed over. Explained to them AGAIN that they should check the Cat Converter and the CO2 Sensor. Noted for further examination.
End of the day, I'm now driving a Black Mazda 2. RX is still being looked at and MAY be back tomorrow. I've told them, I only want it back if it's been fixed.
*Update complete*
Regards,
Grandma! :P

Same as mine, Jan 2004. Never had a CEL myself. There was a problem with the sump on earlier deliveries, but it didn't cause a CEL if I recall correctly. That problem was all sorted by Jan 2004. Very strange.
It's quite possible it's over.
The car was returned today and supposedly, the issue will never come up again. (*cough cough*)
Ok
Monday - Wednesday
- Checked Cat Converter
- Changed Cat Converter
- Reflashed/Reprogrammed
- Engine Light came back on.
- Checked over every possible issue that causes the CEL to show
- Engine Light still on.
- Rang Mazda Australia
- Told to check 'Software' of PCM in detail.
- Mazda checked software.
- FOUND POSSIBLE ISSUE
- Tech reflashing wasn't saying yes to 'Does this vehicle have DCS?'
- DCS was missing in the system, and thus the ABS wasn't working. Sending mixed signals to the DCS/PCM. Engine Light going on from fault. No problem code.
- Reprogrammed PCM manually bit by bit. All systems checked Ok. No Engine Light.
The big test is tomorrow morning. If the engine light comes back on, you'll hear me scream!!
Looks positive though gents! And to think there was a problem with the car when all along it was the all knowledgable Mazda Tech.
Thanks for all your suggestions guys! At least I got a new CAT CONVERTER. :P
