I start the car up when it was 43!!! 43 degree today!!

Sorry... could you elaborate much more about the noise? The only close to "wooping"noise is the rotary sound.

43! No wonder they reckon it is hot at the MCG...

Need more info on the "woop-****" noise It is normal for them to rev a bit ruaciously at a cold start, but I'm not sure about wooping

Greetings All,

I was told that from about 5000kms (from memory - could be less kms) it will give a chirp on startup that is always with you from then on - the service guy called it the 'renesis chirp' and I think it has something to do with the ceramic seals in the engine.

That's what I can remember about it - back from early September when we got our 8. I'm sure the more technical people here will know all about it.

We have nearly 5000kms on ours and no chirp yet.

I'm on 15,000 km and I think TImbo is over 20k.

The only chirping mine does is from the tyres

Could it be the AC compressor clutching in? I'm sure it would be de-clutched at start, then moments later it would cut in, possibly a reason for a short high-pitched "squeal".

And I thought the ceramic seals were in the 26B le-mans engines, not the Renesis? I thought we had electron beam treated metal ones, chill filtered :p Anyway, my nice RX-8 book is with a friend ATM, so I can't check

Cheers,
Hymee.

The Apex seals are made from Acicular cast iron (from the book). Hymee's memory is correct - they are tip electron beam chill hardened too.

It's disturbing the way some Mazda employees BS the general public. That service guy sould know that the Renesis doesn't have ceramic apex seals.

And the 'renesis chirp' is a new one to me. Never heard it. I think we can safely say now from our combined experience that there are no "ECU flips" at 5, 10, 15 or even 20000km.

Yep -- no 'chirp' from mine after 22K. Are we talking about the ABS self-test 'grumble' that occurs just as you move off after starting? More information needed!

Also, I must say I am noticing more gearbox noise - almost turbo-like whistle, but that's at speed, 3rd-4th type changes

I had a shocker the other day. Kicked it over and it sounded like an old cement mixer for 10~15 seconds. Never had the problem again - but I'll mention it at the next service.

My experience is like Hymee's, the only chirps are from the tyres and the occassional passenger not used to the cornering performance

One question needs to be asked though... has the cat's disappearance strangely coincided with the whooping noise?? A case of the cat seeking warmth under the bonnet maybe???

Not too familiar with rotary engines, but it seems both the engine and drivetrain create a fair bit of "aural concern".

Fairly unique noises at that, since I've driven a lot of cars and some of the sounds that emanate from the 8 I've never heard before.

Just part of the car's charm I guess.
