Actually, the thing that really stuck out to me in that article was how close in price the hardtop MX5 is to a BMW Z4 in the UK. The disparity in car pricing around the world really ***** me.
As for the MX5 - 'er indoors was admiring the hardtop on a TV ad last night. When I commented it wasn't an option given the lack of 4 seats, she casually noted that we rarely transport the mini-terrorists in my car anyway and gave me an inviting smile.
Isn't it funny how your brain starts to whirr when this kinda thing is opened up? I reckon in about 15 seconds my long admiration for the MX5 was rekindled, I toyed with the idea of replacing the 8 with one and then decided I couldn't go backwards on power, especially to also lose the flexibility of 4 seats.
...but a MX5 with 200bhp and no doubt a ready aftermarket offering a bit more. Hmmmmm.

I think Mazda is doing just fine atm thanks very much - which is why we'll probably never get an MPS RX8.

It actually drives as well as it looks. I tried it... on the track in the wet . It does not feel heavy at all. I think the salom test will be the best to compare with soft top back to back.
Oh nice that is nice
EZZY, can we go and do a shot like that????

To add to this early next year there will be an engine management unit with it's own harness adapter so no need to splice wires. This unit actually plugs into the cars ecu and talks to it not fool it like most piggybacks. This will allow tuning of all parameters of the NC's maps. On a stock NC they picked up an extra 12-15hp at the wheels with an even more impressive mid range improvements. This will sell for about $900 US.
This is all adding up to a 220bhp NA mx5 with a very meaty mid range all in a package of 1100kg with some simple bolt ons. I have already invested in a couple piggybanks so as I can start saving
There are also some other toys for the NC under development by very reputable companies including bigger throttle bodies, larger better flowing intake manifolds, more aggressive cams as the stock ones are actually very conservative and there is plenty of improvement without going too agressive. Its all adding up to a 240-250bhp NA for those wanting it. Me I will be very happy with 220bhp. That will be fun!

For about $1500 aus dollars plus shipping you will be able to get the header,High Flow Cat & midpipe, catback exhaust & intake which take the car from 170bhp to over 200bhp with most of that gain available from 3000rpm to redline. The initial drive reviews are showing a totally transformed NC and made into a real hoot to boot the load pedal.

The spec miata cars have been dyno proven to produce 30hp at the wheels with just these mods minus the high flow cat.
The header on the NC is very restrictive and actually has a cat built into it no further than 10cm from the engine. Very bad for flow. To keep power where Mazda wanted it they really restricted the intake and exhaust on the MZR engine which has left a lot of room for bolt on mods. Now just to save the money!
And yes Taka improve my driving

Have been looking at a very good FI option that will be available soon but the costs here landed will not give me any change out of $7000.00 without installation and because of the 10.8/1 compression on the engine they were planning on keeping boost to a conservative level and see a hp level between 230-250hp.
220hp with the simplicity of bolt ons and a little tuning at 1/3 the price for me at the moment is the better option. Of course after a while when the FI has proven reliable and the bugs fully worked out I could always at that on top of the bolt ons. With that sort of power level though I think I would get myself into some serious trouble!
