Another thing, i have seen RE050's on American websites. What is the difference between them and the RE040? Is the 50 not available in Australia?

A few members on here seem to rate the Michelin Pilot Sport PS2. Any idea on approx price i should pay for them?
Taka said earlier, somewhere around $600 a corner I think.

I've done over 20K on my PS2's, which has included a few track days and they still have plenty to go.

They may be exxy but I believe the combination of superior grip in wet and dry and comparatively long life is worth the money.

The most important component on your car too, so don't go cheap.

Hi Revolver.I know you were after tyre advice but one thing I think may be worthwhile is to call this guy at mascot bridgestone tyre centre.I'm pretty sure he does all brands of tyres and has given me some very competitive quotes for me and my friends. His name is Andrew Freeman,he's the owner.Tell him that Matt the RX8 guy from the bottleshop sent you.His number is 96674519.Up to you but worth a call while you are shopping around..

For your information. Performance tyre has very low margin. No seller in this world will sell these tyres alone. They prob only have $20-40 per tyre margin while the margin of small tyres are much greater and they sells much more.

I've finally managed to get approval from the CFO for new tyres as she is utterly fed up with the tyre roar from the current OEM ones. Having read some stuff about the issue, have people found an improvement through life (as opposed to initially, when I would expect anything new to be better than the half-worn OEM ones) with the different rubber they've fitted, or is it an endemic RX-8 problem?

Ta,

My PS2's are mid-life and are noticeably quieter than the OEM's were at the same stage of wear.

Mind you, NVH is a failing of most Mazda models (incl our 6), so don't expect Lexus levels of sound from anything you fit.

Can anyone comment on the performance of the RE050A as opposed to the RE040.

Also i have been recommended the Yokohama AS01 or the Falken RT615. Do people have anything good/bad to say about them.

RE050 is better than 040 I think and adrenalin is marketed above 050.

No idea about AS01 but Dunlop Sports Maxx has good report.

Falken is used widely in light car on track and people love them. They are not semis though and heat up easy when the pressure is not right.

The CX-7 comes standard with the 050 but its hard to judge how they are when you're driving a boat

Hi Taka, the Adrenalin (ie. RE001) is marketed as a 'midrage' tyre to compete with midrance Yokohamas (ie. C'drive). RE050 is supposed to be a lot 'higher grade' tyre than Adrenalin.

ps. Adrenalin is supposed to fit sowewhere between the superseeded S03s and and G'grids.

You are right about the Adrenalin not being the top of the line Bridgestone. From the research i have done in the past few days i can gather the supreme grand master big daddy of the Bridgestones is the Bridgestone RE050A Pole Position.

http://www.bridgestone.com.au/tyres/...eads/index.asp

They have not got their order right then.

The best bridgestone road tyre is not available in Australia (which is RE01-R) and RE001's pattern is similar.

Also where is RE070 in the list?

From what I remember, RE070 is a tyre strictly made to run on WRX Sti and NSX-R.

That's more or less an R-spec tyre comparable with Michelin Pilot Sport and Pirelli P-Zero Corsa. From what I gather, RE070s are worth ~2sec at Winton over road tyres.

Not sure if you noticed, but at PI on the weekend one of the EVOs there was also wearing them.

ps. They do fit on IT-R as well.

Here's info on the RE001 (ie. Adrenalin). Tihis mentions that Bridgestone is comparing it to mid-range tyres from other manufacturers. ie Michelin Pilot Primacys and Yokohama C'drive:

Agreed, gotta love marketing *******.

Anyway if anyone is interested i ended up buying the RE050A's. Despite some people on here bashing the OEM tyres i have actually found them very good. The RE050 seems to be the new version of the RE040
225/45/18 at $420 a corner.

I thought the OEM tyres were okay grip-wise and a few of the better drivers have demonstrated that they don't hurt your lap times.

I just feel the PS2's are better again in all depts and are certainly much quieter. Maybe the RE050A's are better in that regard.

Keep us posted.

Yes the RE050's seemed to work well around Sandown last weekend. Gripped well in the corners and on turn in but did not feel as though they offered as much grip under hard braking. With a couple of the braking zones I had a lot of ABS kicking in.

Note though I am not used to tracking on road tyres any more as for the last 2 years have been using semislicks and they are just superb under braking!

What an FN nightmare. They guy ordered the wrong tyres and now realises he can't get the RE050.

So now i am stuck with a car that has a failed pink slip (on rear tyres) and trying to find a replacement tyre that someone has in stock before rego expires on Saturday.

<edit> Found some RE040's. They will do.

What are people views/experiences on the directional tyres with a large grove down the centre and then a tread pattern that goes back at 45 degrees, you know what i mean like a full wet tyre on an F1 car.

A few places recommended different tyres and some had this tread pattern. Personally i would assume these offer excellent grip in the wet but in the dry the tread would flex and the tyre would get hot very quickly. Maybe i am wrong about this.

Personally i want a tyre that holds on for dear life in the dry. I am not going to throw the car around corners ultra hard in the wet leaving the tyres hanging on for dear life, its probably a recipe for disaster.

I have Falken 452s. 235/40/18. These are much quieter and smoother on the road than 040. Has softer sidewall so turn in is not as sharp but excellent dry grip and very progressive tire at the limit. Wet weather much better than 040. See Wheels road tests on tyres. THey finish on par with Goodyear GsD3 and Dunlop Sport max but much cheaper Finished well ahead of Pirelli . Seem to be good bang for your buck.

i just bought some new tyres for the rear, 245/40 dunlop direzza's. much better traction (especially round corners). havnt had much wet weather experience yet.
i find that the 235/40 are not a good tyre for the 8, my dsc keeps braking for me when i know that it doesnt need to. i think its due to the smaller rolling circumferance of the tyre compared to stock (225/45)
