Intake and Exhaust sound files
Intake and Exhaust sound files
As promised - Hymee catback exhaust sound clips! I recorded this sound clip today with my video camera, so take that into account when you hear the clips. The pinging sound in the background is either from the camera or the computer, but no the exhaust! The camera was mounted on a tripod and positioned centrally 4ft behind the car and about 2ft above the ground, just above the level of the exhausts.
Follow this link if you would like to hear a clip of the stock exhaust for comparison. I didn't do a recording before I got my cat-back.

Here is the recording of my Hymee cat-back. It's a .wmv because that is all I could save it as in microsoft movie maker, which is all I have access to at the moment.

But wait, there's more...
I also installed my Rotary Extreme intake today. First impressions - it looks great and the exhaust volume is now even louder and deeper again than it was with the cat-back alone. The tone is now "nastier" than before. I have read others describe the intake making the engine "roar" and that is quite an appropriate description.
With the bonnet up and the engine at idle, you can also hear a quiet whistling noise coming from the intake as the air is sucked in through the K&N filter. Get on the throttle though, and any noise under the bonnet is drowned out by the exhaust. I really feel like I am driving a street machine now (not a rice rocket!). My RX-8 has a totally different personality to when it was stock.
Performance? Rotary extreme claim 10hp@wheels for their intake and most cat-back systems are claiming 5-10hp@wheels, so with both mods combined, I am bound to be making more power than stock. I wont really know exactly how much until I can get an accurate dyno run under my belt, or Hymee lets me drive his stock beast for a comparison.
It's hard to tell with my butt how much faster the car is, firstly because I drive it all the time, and secondly because the noise alone makes it feel faster. I've attached a sound clip of the exhaust with the intake installed for comparison with the cat-back only clip. You might be able to hear a bit of a difference. I also recorded before and after intake clips with the bonnet up, but the exhaust just drowned them out. Enjoy.

Wildcard,
Wow - thanks for the files! It is apparent now how hard it must be to make faithful reproductions of exhausts, as it really sounds better in the flesh.
As for comparing to my ride - you have piloted my car before, and you know you are welcome to do again. I probably owe you a bit of rubber from the launches I did for you the other night!
So what are you doing tonight :D
Cheers,
Hymee.
