Hi Guys...6000Kms later

Hi all

It's been a while since I've written here.

I've been drive a lot , 6000KM in 2 months is pretty for me.

I absolutely love this car....I don't know why people have to complain about lack of power etc...but you can't make everybody happy.

The car seems to be getting louder and louder by the day and I love the sound it makes.

This car does drink petrol after being a former MX5 owner...
I've been getting around 300-350 per tank , is that normal? Mainly been city driving though. I did get 290 off one tank, but I was redlining a fair bit...I'm addicted to the buzzer sound

All in all this car rocks...I love driving...

the RX-8 Transformer looks cool on the dash...I'll post a pic soon

Take it easy guys

Glad to see you're enjoying it.

300-350km out of a tank equates to about 17L-20L per 100kms.

I normally average about 18L per 100kms when I'm being 'gentle', so that's fairly normal.
Then again, it depends what you consider 'gentle'.

Welcome back chauman.

You took delivery about the same time as me - but I've done half the kays - just over 3000 in my two months.

As for fuel economy after an intial high figure mine has settled to around 15l/100km - it's higher if I just do city peak hour stuff.

Best economy came on the recent SE QLD RX-8 "cruise" and after - so I recommend finding yourself some fellow RX-8'er and go for a "cruise"

It's always good to be reminded from time to time how awesome our car is. Thanks chauman!

OT: That's some pretty low fuel economy nojooc. Is it all city driving? I did the Putty road and Wisemans ferry yesterday. Just over 400km with plenty of WOT and high revs and I still got 14.5L/100km. My normal mix of city/country driving gets me 13.5L/100km. I can't get over 15L/100km no matter how hard I drive it.

Short trips and idling while cold kills fuel economy. I get 15L around town on lots of 10km trips.

I'm currently experimenting with driving the '8 a bit harder - I got my best economy cruising at 3200 RPM, so I'm trying to be a little less conservative on gear changes to see what difference if any that makes.

I find that driving the car hard has very little effect on fuel economy. I get almost the same economy driving to work as I do fanging the **** out of it through the hills. :D

Fuel consumption is pretty crap on my 8, but I've grown to live with it.

The minute it averages out above 20L will be the day I will be a bit concerned.

I've never averaged better than 16L/100kms and that was only when I was running the car in.

All my driving is city driving, no freeways for me.

No I don't hate you Taka.

I kind of expected my crap consumption........ afterall, catback, intake, constant redlining, exhaust crackle/popping, occassional flames.......... doesn't exactly equal good fuel economy.

Funny .. I was just thinking of fuel economy yesterday.

With my first '8' I would struggle to get to 400 before the light came on.

This new one gets to about 430.

In looking at the actual numbers, the new one is about 10% more economical.

Even more interesting,

In the old car 110kmh in 6th was spot on 3500 revs. In the new car, its 3200. Any ideas??

R,

May I suggest it is your speedometer... and not the different gear ratio in your new car .

I don't even know what is my rev at 110kmh in 6th... no idea..still

I'm interested to know what others rev at in 6th at 110kmh

I think it is the other way. Since you are having a lower rev with the same speed reading... that means the actual speed is lower. Hence, it is actually doing a much lower speed than it is reading - I guess it will be a protective factor.

If you wanna check, hire a GPS meter and they will give the exact kmh

i think i read somewhere that the RX8 speedo is actually slower than the actual speed, i think it was 2 - 3kph slower .
maybe grab a mate and do a freeway speed test

Long distance figures

I meant to start a new thread on this but I thought everyone was sick of fuel consumption figures

Over Christmas I did a Sydney-Brisbane-Rainbow-Beach-Sydney round trip (around 2500klms). I've got (naturally) a Hymee exhaust and a newly replaced standard catalytic converter (2 months old).

Prior to the new cat my fuel consumption was not so impressive.
Now...

Highway driving Sydney/Bris (freeway plus divided road). Cruising at 110 plus frequent overtaking maneuveres on divided road (I went New Englad Hwy, much more fun!) These figures are ALL highway.

42.1L/430k (9.8L/100)
53.5L/506k (10.6L/100)
50.9L/486k (10.4L/100)
42.8L/428k (10.0L/100)

(I usually go to red fuel light but servo's with premium start to thin out on the way up so I had to stop where I could!)

Week at my families house in the country, introducing my father to the joys of rotary ownership. (ie caning around country roads).
40.3L/351k (11.5L/100)

Back in Sydney, daily 30k roundtrip commute.
52.4L/371k (14.1L/100)

So there you go. I am quite happy with my fuel consumption now obviously.
I would not class myself as a conservative driver. As a few members have said, driving aggressively does not seem to make much difference, its the frequent cold starts and idling in city traffic that hits you.

Prior to my new catalytic converter though, I would only get 280k's to a FULL tank for the sydney commute. So it has made quite a big difference.

I think we have a new winner in Muzz getting the most juice into his tank on a fill!!!

I still normally get 450+ km out of a not totally emptied tankful.

Cheers,
Hymee.
