Help Plz Rx-8

Hi i am an owner of a 2004 rx-8 in Asutralia and have a small scratch on my rx-8 (black in color) about 8 cm long and have been told that it will cost at least $4000 AUD to get it fixed as a panel beater told me he would have to take off teh back window, the left rear quater panel off as well as my tail light and that it is a huge job! i was wondering if this is true or is he just rising the price as he knows what the car is and how much it is worth?

can any one help?

if something needs to be resprayed, he would have to spray all around the sctached area, no parts should have to removed that a scratch as small as this, taping off the area should be enough

for 2000 - 2500, he could have resprayed your whole car, who ever told u this must be an idiot

for just a small scratch like that i would expect 200, even the most expensive will cost 500 dollars at most!!!!

you can try the mobile scratch and dent repair person. Most car yards use them and they seem to do a good job.

May be worth a call at least to find out

I had a scratch on my drivers side door repaired that involved removing and respraying the whole door (I'm pretty sure). It only cost $450. I had another quote that was $600, but they said they were also going to respray the quarter panel as well to get the colour matching right.

Pisses me off that some people are that down-right dishonest!

You need to realise though that because of the metallic paint on the RX-8, they will at least have to respray the entire panel in question. I understand that it is pretty much impossible to "blend" a repair into metallic paint, but I'm no expert.

Ezzy can correct me as well, but in addition to what Wildcard said, I believe that modern 2-pack (i.e non-solvent based) paints cant be blended either, and that is why the full panel needs to get done. Then you get the problem of laying down the metalic differently between panels, giving a percieved colour mismatch (like Wildcard says).

Cheers,
Hymee.

rant
stupid optus cable stalled... and whatever i typed earlier got lost
/rant

anyway, cut the long stroy short, "blending" has been used in 99% of insurance works, but the repaired "whole" panel has to be painted, and then blend 1/2 of the panels in front and back of it (or top/down), then buff/polish to bring all panels to the same finish. the quality of the paint and clear are very important. it determines the quality of the repair/paint and how long the finish would last.

light colours are pain in the back side to colour match, ie. silver, light grey, baby blue, pearly colours.... thats why blendings are required to bring "everything" together.

the ultimate best case scenario would be having the whole side re-painted again, but it will be too time consuming and costing too much (ie. labour/materials)

in this case, black would be an easier colour to match.

put up some pix and see, maybe it can be buffed out.

i'd like to see that panel beater's quote for this job

/time to hit submit reply..... hope it doesnt stall again

I had some minor (paint only) damage on my rear quarter panel last year and when I was talking to the smash repairer he said that if the panel ever did get badly damaged so that it needed to be removed it would involve removing the rear window glass AND the roof.

That was to fix it 'properly'. He said that most insurance companies will not allow him to perform a fix like that due to expense etc, so what they generally have to do is cut (!) the panel around the spot welds (bought half way up the rear pillar) from when it was assembled from the factory.

If I ever have a ding I hope it's a write-off...
