Just to bring this slightly back on topic, there was always that memorable Parliamentary exchange back in the 1960's, when Fred Daly, a master of the one-line quip interjected during a new National Party member's maiden speech:

NP member: Now first up , I'd like to remind everyone that I'm a country member

Fred Daly: Don't worry, we'll remember....

They don'y make 'em like that anymore

Must lend you my book of Prime Ministerial insults one day - some pearlers from back when the knife in the ribs was done with restraint, intelligence and style. :D

This Australian attitude of lets just bend over and take it pisses me off. I would expect you guys to be a little more concerned over such issues, especially when the article clearly points out the illegal practices the government is using against motorists to raise revenue.

PS: If you don't like the cross city tunnel there is something you can do about it.......don't use it. Its must be clearly very dangerous anyway considering it opened with speed cameras from day one.
As an idealist?? I would agree with you... when the M5 and M2 was first built.. I was so against the tolls on these roads that I refused to use them for years, literaly..
In reality?? what did it achieve?? 2/10th of FA... other than to raise my blood pressure and stress levels as I fight the battle of Sydney traffic every day as I avoided the tolls.
Lane Cove council has spent thousands and thousands fighting the development of the Lane Cove tunnel... Has that done anything?? I think not.
So while you try and preach that we live in a democracy, the reality of the situation is.. there is no true democracy on this planet.. it would never work because as you know, too many chefs spoil the broth.
Governments rarely do what is totally in the best interest of the country or it's people. In a democratic society, they at least try to "mostly" do what is in the best interest of the people.

This is true... but again, with so many different people, rarely is there ever a subject that is important enough to invoke the emotions of enough people to create a voice loud enough to be heard.
Either that or get the "right" people to scream and shout on your behalf..

No, they just do whatever they think will get them re-elected.

Look, the real difficulty is that we have a 'lesser evil' democracy. Rarely does someone agree with ALL of the policies of any party, much less the two major ones. So you pick the one you hate the least and just try to get on with life.

Of course, you could also have a go at getting into power yourself but the Westminster system means you have to join a party and toe the party line for many years before you get any chance at having a direct impact on policy direction, unless of course you manage to become the balance of power through electoral freakishness (stand up Barnaby!).

Still, beats the hell out of communism. :D

Well, here's the thing: I reckon the power of these networks and forums will be progrssively developed to the point that it may become possible to obviate 'party power' through alternatives...it's just an 'I reckon..' at the moment, but think about it.

Possibly but probably at the expense of stability, which is no mean consideration.

We might get screwed in a whole range of ways but it's been a long time since Australia hosted any kind of significant civil unrest that resulted in fatalities (last one that comes to mind is the Eureka Stockade in fact).

At least Revolver and Timbo would sound better than Abbot and Costello :o Unfortunate names for two politicians / potential leaders!

Cheers,
Hymee.

Reminds me of a true story I heard once.

There was this female lawyer named *****, see, who started working for Robinson and Tyrell Solicitors. Anyway, she worked her way up through the ranks and it got to the point where all the old partners were retiring and dying off, etc. Finally, she made partner only to see the other remaining partner decide to call it a day.

She desperately needed a partner to keep the firm afloat because she couldn't manage on her own and so started looking around for a suitable candidate. Eventually, she found the perfect person, a very smart, able woman who fitted in beautifully with Ms ***** ethos and agreed 100% on the direction she wanted to take the firm in.

Only one tiny problem - this woman's surname was Hole.

As far as I know, the firm is thriving. And yes, it's still called Robinson and Tyrell. :D

A few years ago i was driving around in an a unregistered Mercedes 560 SL because my secretary forgot to pay my rego , LOW AND BEHOLD I GET PULLED OVER BY TWO FEMALE POLICE

Being polite as ever :D i asked them what the problem was well they told me that i was driving an unregistered car
The senior police woman was a real bitch she procedded to remove my personalised number plates and told me that my car would have to stay where it was , as the car was on a main road with tram tracks i wanted to drive it around the corner , she refused to give me permission .

Then i proceded to push my car to get it to a safer place she tried to stop me , i told her that unless she was prepared to shoot me i would be moving my car , anyway we got along as well as petrol and fire .

When i told her that i needed her full rank and name she got more pissed off , her name was Helen POKE ACTING SENIOR SARGEANT Helen poke :D well i procceded to laugh and smile .

No need to say i hate female coopers more than the male ones , she was a real though dyke , but i gave as good as i got and did manage to get my car to a save spot .

Also i made sure that she got reported to the police commissioner , who happened to be my best friends fathers mate :D

I still smile when i think of the number of times i repeated her full name and rank to her face .

B...free

At the risk of all that's PC raining **** on me from a large height, I gotta say that SOME women should never be allowed to carry a gun - I too have struck the overzealous policewoman type.

It's a bit like the boy scout movement attracting paedophiles as scout leaders. The cops seem to attract some awful people, which is a shame because every now and again I come across an honest one! :D

Which brings us neatly back on topic.

It seems to me a basic right in relation to any speeding offence should be the right to ask for a current test certificate for the device showing it is correctly calibrated and functional.

That test certificate ought to be from an independent testing authority.

The fact is, you can't really do that. First, the cop usually refuses and starts a minute inspection of your vehicle for roadworthiness; second, the testing is all done internally, as I understand it, and finally, even a current certificate might be voided if the instrument has been badly treated or wrongly set up
