Getting ripped-off on Accessories prices ??

I have seen huge variations in dealer price lists for accessories. Clearly some of the dealers are putting amazingly higher margins on these extras than others.

I have not taken delivery of my car yet, however, priced a difference of just over $2000 between the accessories list I was given at the dealership I ordered my car at and another one in another suburb of Melb. This is just on the accessories that I have selected.

ie. rear spoiler, front air dam, side kit, strakes, chrome petrol cap, front and rear rotary insignia.

Have you shopped around for your accessories and negotiated a better price before taking delivery ?

OR

Taken delivery of the car and then shopped around for better prices and added accessories later ?

IMO the easiest way to make the purchase is select what you want and make it part of the overall buy price, so that you can take delivery with no messing around later on. However, I'm not going to allow my dealer to rip me off to the tune of that kind of difference in pricing, just because I'm buying the car from him.

This is the problem with the current supply & demand situation.

They rip you off and will milk it now, because they feel that they do not have to negotiate with all the consumer demand.

What has your experience been ?

I take delivery on Wednesday.
Like you I wanted the accessories, however, I have decided to wait.
Buying after initial purchase should save you in Luxury Car Tax 25%

Right now the dealers don't seem to be overly negotiable as there is little stock around
(I decided last monday to buy one, ordered on Wednesday for pick up this wednesday)
But for a different colour I had to go to another dealer. So I struggled to bargain.

I shopped around after I bought mine... and went direct to spare parts departments. Managed to save $40 on the floor mats by doing this. Price was still a rip off... but at least they fit perfectly.

I'm looking into getting some accessories overseas... there is a huge variation in pricing if you compare ours to US and UK... absolute proof that there are huge markups happening.

Much cheaper to have acccessories fitted during a service rather than new. (Yes luxotax)

The parts department can also choose to sell to you at trade, be nice to them :D

Th only thing about importing parts I'd be careful about is your warranty situation. The only way to make buying from OS really effective is to negotiate with a biggish order (best done through a club) - otherwise shipping cost dilute savings.

If you guys want to deal with a great guy in the trade...............

Darrin Ray @ Gosford Mazda (spare parts) 02 4337-8099

Darrin is a full time rotorhead & owns a Eunos Cosmo so you can be sure you are talking to the long term converted. Darrin will always help out a fellow rotary enthusiast like yourselves & can organise shipping if your interstate.

Now some dealers are being blatantly greedy with the RX-8 sales. Especially with the accessories.

One way to haggle your deal is to buy the accessories seperately & have the PD (pre-delivery) guys fit them for free.

This can be done as I have already done it for a friend this weekend.

Dont let the dealers scare you into thinking your warranty is dead if you fit aftermarket parts. A few class actions against other manufacturers has seen cases proven that things such as a sports exhaust does not viod a warranty. The attached part must be proven to be the reason for the failure first.

Will Darrin import a Borla cat-back exhaust and install it for me? That would be sweet.

I cant wait for aftermarket parts from japan to be more available here... US prices suck and shipping is an issue from japan > USA > AU!

Cool home made accessories.

You might not have to wait long for home made go fast parts.

PROMAZ in Melbourne have had their car for a fortnight and have a cold air intake done already. Exhaust is only 2 more weeks away so why pay $$ to Mazda to look good when you can go faster for less!

Im booked in for a listen of exhaust once dyno numbers are in. Approx 6kw for air intake alone.

Anyone want to join me for a group discount?

I'm interested, but I'm awfully fussy too.

Just about anyone can build an intake and an exhaust, but to make them effective performance upgrades takes some smarts.

Early versions of anything typically also lack refinement.

This isn't a swipe at Promaz, I don't know them and they may be capable of amazing work.

Does it make sense to say "I'm in no rush to go fast"

It's an aircleaner upgrade, no cold air ducting changes...
Quite throaty when revved hard :D

I've seen and heard the exhaust, I like it! Barely any difference at idle, but has a nice note when revved. Driving it at highway speeds is apparently little different to stock noise levels, it's only noticable under accelleration.

I should hopefully get to drive it this week some time to compare it against a stocker...
