Mazda Japan retail the RX-8 (top line) at $38k

Mazda Australia do the same car here at $64k

Each dealer here is in for $14k profit per car. Mazda Australia scam around $20k per car.

Remember that Mazda Australia are invoiced a lot lower than the retail price in Japan.

This has nothing to do with taxes & duties as the same taxes apply to the M2, M3, M6 etc & they have around a 5% - 10% difference, not a 60% increase on its domestic cousin.

This is a complete scam & Mazda Australia are laughing all the way to the bank.......

A recent trip to the USA where they sell the RX-8 at a reasonable $39k found that the dealer is in for around $2k per car. They fell on there face when told about the Mazda Australia scam & when asked if RX-8s ever sold here. They where shocked to find the culture here is brainwashed into thinking a 60% increase is not a problem.

You are absolutely right on singapore. Over here you have to pay a premium just to have a paper to says you can have a car(certificate of entitlement is what they call it). Cost S$20+k to a whopping S$50K at one period of time.

You are Singaporian right?

Why getting a piece of paper so expensive? It is so out of logic la~

Can't contact my mate who works at a Mazda dealership at the moment because he's on holidays, but will try and find out the exact margin.

I doubt it's that much since total margin on a S2K is about $12K which is a more expensive imported Jap car.

While on a local car for example, a $100K HSV GTS only has about $13K margin.

The RX8 is expensive in Australia, but I doubt all that additional mark up goes to Mazda Australia, let alone its dealerships.

Unfortunately I am. Sigh.... The government limit the number of vehicles on the road. So they issue the paper to control quota. Dealers spoilt the market by bidding crazy price(after all it is the end user like me who ended up paying).

On top of tt, high taxes plus high dealership margin=very expensive car.

Petrol is expensive too

Straight from a Sydney Mazda dealership. For obvious reasons, I wont say which one, but I assure you all.

I would not state this if it where untrue. Another dealership has told me they are up for $7k per car but he was cagey so I was unsure if that was true.

Then a personal friend who happens to work at another dealership caught up with me in Aug-04 & we discussed the overpricing issue. He was quite frank about his dealerships profit margin as had no reasons to lie to me. They use that $14k of fat as "Room to move" on discounting.

Take a little away for luxury car sales tax (25% any part over $57K) & local compliance issues which Mazda Australia absorb.

Think about it guys, Mazda Oz would be getting invoiced by Japan well under the retail price of the car in Japan (about $30k) that leaves another $34k of fat on the bone per car. Naturally Mazda Australia would be in for the lions share of that $34k but the dealers love the $14k of fat they get too. Compared to the $2k or $5k they score for reasonably priced M2's, M3's, M6's etc. An RX-8 sale makes there week...............

We have all heard the saying "The truth hurts". As I am letting out these truths, the pricing people at Mazda Australia hate me more each day...........

They might have paid a lot of underlying cost DMRH... as a mass production they have spent time training dealers, promotion and all the **** with road regulation and safety.

Yes they are earning a lot. But the most profit they are getting is not from RX-8. The most money the dealer is earning is from Mazda 3. They are selling them like rice in the Chinese restaurant.

They can still a bit tight *** and give you $a thousand or 2 discount but they are not as interested as 1 in 2 customer come through the door and have money ready for a Mazda 3.

How much do you reckon of the mark up of a 911GT3 RS, for example? Or the BMW 1 series? It is all relative

Have taken your advice actually. I wont buy one for the 60% mark up issue, niether will many of my friends for the same reasons.

Poor Singaporians, the taxes making that car practically for the Millionaires only is a killer. Much cheaper watching them drive by.....lol

Taka:.... $2k+ (dealer profit) on the M3 is very practical & makes the car well priced, no wonder there is a 3-month waiting list for delivery. Demand is literally that high.......Well done mazda for a great little car
