Carefully read Gomez's instructions. Oh so carefully prised the rear RH tab, and broke it Oh well, it's not noticeable.

Great shifting! Even my wife likes it.
You can definitely hear gear noise in-cabin though, especially in 2nd. (With radio off).

 

This shifter should have come stock!!

The install went exactly to plan thanx to Gomez' DIY instructions...thanx mate. Now that I am in the "snick, snick" club I would recommend the short shifter to anyone else who is looking to add a better feel to their driving pleasure!!!

 

installed mine on last Sat.. it was a very simple although I had hard time getting the centre console off since it was first time and was afraid of cracking something if I applied too much pressure.. after that it was a breeze. the shifting is good although it's very metallic at the moment. hopefully it will get loosened and smooth out as I drive more often.
i noted a lot of noise when shifting to 2nd gear but all in all very good stuff.

OK I installed mine today and initially I noted lots of noise being transfered into the cabin. especially in 2nd. I even removed and reinstalled just incase I did something wrong.
So i've been driving around all day loving the shift action but was being really bothered by the amount of noise in 2nd and a little in 4th. To the point where I was almost going to reinstall the OEM shifter.
Then tonight as I was coming home I decided to remove the shift **** altogether whilst at a set of lights.
snick snick 1st gear... all good, then snick snick 2nd gear... and to my amazement no noise. just to be sure I drove the rest of the way home in 2nd and it was as quiet as the OEM shifter.
I get home a screw the know back on but not to tight this time and drove around the block, the noise came back ever so slightly but no where near as bad.
Further testing revealed that the amount of noise in 2nd was directly related to how tight the shift **** was screwed on.

Any thoughts anyone?

I notice the 2nd gear has more noise when slowing down... the "woooo" sounds like the ambulance is behind me. There are kick kick noise during changing gear... I think it is cool.

Once it warms up and the lubes melts and get around all around the gear - it is perfect and very lovely. I got used to the 5th - 6th and I did get up to 3rd instead of 5th day. But hey, I should never let it back to neutral in the first place

No, but the length of the shaft plus the **** may be triggering some sort of resonance (sound triggered by vibration).. When the **** is screwed up or down the shaft length changes and the resonance goes away...

I know it is easy to say now, but when I was wondering about your problem before replying toyour emails, I thought about if you had tightened the **** enough. Sounds like you fixed it yourself! That must give you some gratificiation!

That doesn't make sense to me, that's why I thought he was hanging out with you at the Rum Factory.

Really though, has iit been solved yet?? We have not heard this before from over 100 installs. Taka, you have a small whine in second, right? Could you try this trick next time you drive your car. Just loosen the **** a turn or two and give us a report back.

Well, it's a case of over tightening it rather than not enough. Do you know if the OEM **** is hollow inside or anything like that.
From what I can see, it appears that when the **** mates firmly with the taper on the SSS (Short Shifter's Shaft :p ) it acts like a resonance box of sorts.... I could be talking out of my *** here. But that's the only explaination I can give for the excess noise when the **** is really tightened down hard.
I'm going to try and attach something like a small nut at the top of SSS so that I can still screw the **** down tight, but have it not mate with the taper on the SSS

 

RP, the whine is from the engine for sure. It has a change of tone while the rev is coming down. So I don't think it is from the shifter per se but it is just transmitting noise from the tranny I guess. I installed PoLak's leather boot and retighten the ****. It does seems no effect, so I think I have a different noise from what LittleJohnny has.

what you're describing sounds like that same issue. It definitely whines more when the revs are coming down.
Could you try and remove your **** altogether see if the noise is still there?

I don't beleive the noise is from the shifter itself, but rather Transmission noise being transmitted. Like I said, once the **** is completely off, there is virtually no noise at all. i.e. same as OEM.

 

Yes, there's a little more noise from the short shifter -- especially if you keep your hand on the shift after changing -- but the noise was always going to be there because, IIR, the OEM has a rubber isolator, which by design cut the transmission noise back while making the shift seem less precise. Am not sure what **** tightening / loosening does

 

I have noticed the same thing as Timbo - if you leave your hand on the shift the downward/sideward pressure seems to generate more noise. Maybe the weight of the shift **** pushes the shift down in a similiar fashion. (have you tried pushing the shift without the **** on to see if it happens then?)
I don't mind the extra noise - it sounds racey :-)

 

yup.. all is quiet on the western front when the **** os completely off.

 

Just thought I'd add, that despite all the scientific conjecture and theories offered, LittleJohn's remedy really, really works. Did it myself and notice both 2nd and 4th noticeably quieter . I could end with all sorts of summary advice like not overscrewing your ****, but you blokes would take it the wrong way! :p

 

I thought underscrewing was the cause?

That is why L&L's never made a squeak.

Proper...CHANGING OF GEARS and driving , installation , and using Royal purple oil helps plus i realize i am driving a Mechanical piece of equiptment that makes some noise , guess i am not as **** AS SOME .
