First batch of Axial Flow Engineering (Richard Paul) Short Shifters arrived in Oz

Hi guys,

The first "official" shipment is sitting at customs waiting for me to get and do some paper work and collect.

Unless RAP smuggled a prohibited substance in them and they are just waiting to arrest me. (I must have watched Border Security too much).

This is after 'Mez sucessfully trialled one earlier this year. 'onya 'Mez. http://www.hymee.com/smilies/sm_bounce.gif

I'll post some pics l8r. Then I better get down to the post office and forward Taka's one on to him. :D http://www.hymee.com/smilies/sm_dance.gif

Cheers,
Hymee.

The "N" flash is the U.S flash, Michael. You may have to pay import duty to get that one..... :)

I don't know how many shifters Hymee has left after the pre-orders, are you in the queue? Anyone who isn't, should be!

Gomez.

This is the SHIFTER thread.

The FLASH thread is the one where we talk about OIL.

Yeah - I'm about to go and post Taka's and perhaps Locks as well.

Installed it. 2EZ!! About to drive it. Woohoo. Can't wait!!

Cheers,
Hymee.

timbo 03-13-2005 10:11 PM

Hey, what's this short shifter thing . .. seems I have completely missed a whole thread(s)...more info needed, especially on how it all works/looks.

(ok, I know now.... knowing Hymee, this whole discussion probably took place in some thread with the misleading name 'body kits' or 'extra hp from air cleaner' which -- to my obvious detriment -- I skip :( )

Don't tell me to 'search' -- I'll sulk!

Hymee 03-13-2005 10:28 PM

I shall use the search function.
I shall use the search function.

Bahaha. Gotcha back!

Around page 22 is where Gomez tests the first one in Oz.

Cheers,
Hymee.

Gomez 03-13-2005 10:59 PM

timbo, wend your way through that thread to post 330. That's where the review starts. See also my DIY for the install. Do a search for that one, no link from me, buddy!!

Am hopeful of receiving Richard Paul's short sister ;) overnight, by courtesy of the Hymeister

(stops sulking)

Hymee 03-14-2005 12:39 AM

Timbo,

Yours is on its way. The only way I could get it to you any quicker would be for me to send it to you as unnacompanied baggage on a Virgin Blue flight! How much would that be do ya reckon, 'Mez??

Cheers,
Hymee.

timbo 03-14-2005 01:07 AM

Hey, if I'd have known that was an option.... ;)

I'm pretty impressed by Virgin Blue....especially their selection of cabin crew based on the, er, old criteria...

Of course, the frequency of their services to Canberra are pretty crap, but that is to be expected....

Free...if I was in Bne!!!

takahashi 03-14-2005 05:59 AM

Hymee thanks for running around for me. I found myself owing you a 6 pack. I will bring some beer when I have a chance to come to Brisbane.

Exciting news - never excited about short stick before... hehe

Hymee 03-14-2005 03:39 PM

A carton of Bundy and Cola would be fine, thanks!

Cheers,
Hymee.

sco 03-14-2005 03:43 PM

So when do we get a Hymee review of his car's new short shifter? (Unbiased of course ;) )

That would be a better result than getting Richard's short sifter.... ;)

So you don't remember this quote from early last year?? I'll jog your memory my learned friend, it had something to do with this picture...

Gomez :)

takahashi 03-14-2005 04:46 PM

Chatted with Hymester on the phone today. He is quite happy with the short shifter. I am sure he is going to do a unbias report.

Gomez, I have your shifter in my package, all greased up and ready to go. I am actually will be at Balwyn Friday night (maybe), Saturday and Sunday. So I will be free passing anything to you anytime on the weekend.

Will that be too much pressure to do a live installation or you prefer to work on Friday/Saturday night???? I will try to give you a call tonight.

Ya gotta be careful of so-called wise men....sometimes they really just are ... smart arses ;)

Aaahh Skid Marx ... a great avatar ... may go back there one day!

So, what else have I been missing on this forum   Gimme some good terms to search on.... :o

Hymee 03-14-2005 05:19 PM

C'arn Taka,

You can just about do it driving along. Hehehehe.

Just kidding.

Yes, I am very pleased with it. I drove it for much longer today. It took no time at all to adjust to it. It just snicks into gear, before you expect. The lockout on reverse is very positive. No problems going up and down through all six ratios. In fact it is almost like you just move the stick for-aft and it knows if you are going up ratios or down shifting and goes left/right throught the gates as appropriate. I know that is not what is happening, but it just seems to work so well. Shifts are completed like they are second nature. No need to really worry about which side of the gate you are on.

One thing I noticed. I used to sometimes go out of reverse, and into 3rd - which makes it a little hard to get off the line. Now the reduced throw means I think I got 3rd by accident, but I really got 1st!

To my best judgement, there is no additional noise coming from the stick whilst driving along. There is some nice whirrs slightly audible when you have you "hand on it" but only really when you hold pressure against it. When you just are doing nice easy shifts, you hardly hear any difference. But when you are getting up it, you can get some nice little whirs as the syncro's spin each other to match RPMs. Then - click.

There is one slight tip I can help with Gomez's instructions. It is regarding the first step in removing the console cover. The first small "access cover" part can easily be removed without the aid of a screwdriver. Just poke you finger in from the front, via the hand-brake slot, and push the cover to the rear.

Cheers,
Hymee.

Hymee.
